So I had a pretty bad fall this morning. My damn shoes have tripped me up a number of times this week (need new shoes apparently). In addition to scrapping me up pretty badly on my hand, damn I hate abrasions, and emphasizing the aforementioned need of new shoes, it also broke my laptop screen (which was in the case!). There is not external damage to the chassis but the screen is cracked.

I look at this as an opportunity to replace the TN Panel. Guess I have no other way to look at it. Any suggestions? Would be nice if there were a drop in replacement that was non-tn. I'll obviously start researching it myself but hoping someone has already done this research. I also guess I should invest in a hard sleeve or case to use with my messenger bag, It is a laptop case but clearly not protective enough.

I didn't post in the mods and tweaks thread because it would get buried there. Once I replace the screen I'll write up a full procedure with pics and everything, and then post it to that thread.

Somebody identified an LG/Phillips panel that would fit. Have no idea if it was a TN. Can't imagine you'll find an IPS. They had matt and gloss. I'll see if I can locate the post and link it here.

Hey thanks. At the least a matte replacement would be nice. What sort of connector does the 3820TG use? 40pin-L?

    EDIT:
Think I found the lg screen you were talking about?

    Glossy
Only matte option I've found is:
I really like matte screens, but my current screen is an AUO322C and has horrid viewing angles. The matte screen was made for a 3810z but I think it has the same connector and dimensions. I guess I should go with the matte. The LG is said to be better by those in this forum, but I can't find any review specifics. I know the matte will make a difference, it has a no dead pixel guarantee and the viewing angles can't possibly be worse than what I've used for the last few months.

All I need now is to confirm that the connector is the same and it is a done deal. I wish there were an IPS 1600x900 matte option out there... I would pay for it. Anyone have a better suggestion? Better yet, anyone care to post angled shots of their LGD01F7 or AUO Matte panel so I can see the viewing angles?

The matt panel is from the 13.3" Travelmate 8372.

A 300 nits, matt display would be perfect on the 3820TG.

Coax, keep us updated if you do order from LaptopScreen.com (edited the original post to correct the link..thx folsom :))

I'd be interested in quality of the panel as well as the installation procedure.

@coaxmetal - I have a shop manual for the 3820TG that shows the disassembly checklist, including removal of the display. Let me know if you want a copy.

Hilarious, I just broke my screen today!
Ugh. I feel so incredibly bummed out right now. Knowing how to disassemble the unit would be fantastic.

whats with all the broken screens, I feel so bad. Here's to having better luck!

While Iv never broken anything Iv owned accidentally (grimace's at alienware laptop keyboard that turned into an accordian a week ago) when I was younger about 5 or 6 I was riding my bike with a bumble bee in a glass jar. I feel over and broke the jar with my hand. I got cut not stung tho thankfully.

Bad things happen to everyone and Im sure youl never forget your fall that broke your 3820tg for god sakes but thats that, cant turn back time.

ps: If you have time Id like a handbook to, email in sig

I'd recommend the Zeroshock III in the 13.3". I bought one, dropped it from five feet in the air a couple of times to test, and everything is still in tip top shape.

    Highly recommend it ^_^
