Guys, I hope that someone can help me please. I've got a 3820T and it shuts down frequently while I am using Microsoft Word! I do have the 9 cell battery and I don't play games. Usually I would just place the laptop on the desk. I've contacted Acer but they are not interested. I've managed to remove the heatsink/fan and gave the whole laptop a good clean. It is still shutting down! I wonder why...

Cause the 5820TG I ordered comes with 6GB unmatched pairs, so I plan on getting 4GB matched cause I'm good with 4GB. But I want lower Cas ram like I have for my desktop and just wondering if anyone tried HyperX modules with thier 3820/4820/5820TG?

There's not enough information in your post to be helpful. We need specs of your 3820t and i would run hardware monitor from CPUID. It could be temp related. Why not just send it back for warranty?

1,5GB RAM in usage, and my CPU is loud and at 54/53 degrees temp. Bullocks. Do I have to have in mind that I use an external monitor?

Which grafikcard you are using? And which fan is the loud one, the left or right one if you are sitting before the laptop and typing?

Do the hybrid drivers I see mentioned on the forums here work with the ATI 5470 cards? I see on the Acer site that they have one driver for this model and another for models with better cards. Thanks for any help.

It's not appropraite to ask members of this thread to violate Abo San's copyright and illegally pass along a key to setfsb. You're request very likely violates forum policy. The shareware version of the program can be DL from the SetFSB site. My experience has been that if my computer could not OC with SetFSB, Abo San will refund your donation. Can't help you with the lack of paypal.

Thanks. I also note that as of yesterday there is an update on windows update that states that an "issue has been identified that could allow a user with administrative privileges to load an unsigned driver. This update resolves that issue." I am thinking this might prevent us from using the Hybrid driver as its unsigned. Does anyone know what this update will do if applied?

The update prevent you for a rootkit.

It has nothing to do with the driver.

How hot your 3820TG could get?

I am playing Crysis 2 on it these days. To my surprise, both CPU and GPU exceeded 100C, and the latter actually was 107C.

Dunno if it's the game or bad thermal contact. I got my 3820TG back from Acer and they had replaced the dead mb.

Anyone with Crysis 2 can report the in-game temperatures?

When I played the Crysis 2 Demo, my temps got nowhere near this, meaning 83C max for the CPU and 80C max for the GPU. I would say there is definitely something wrong as those temps can impact the life of your hardware. Are you overclocking at all or is that just with stock system? Also do you prop up your 3820 to get better ventilation or just lay it flat? Ambient room temps?

I've got a fairly warm running 4820TG and it gets to 101C on the CPU and a max of 90C or so on the GPU. Anything over 95C is too hot for the GPU.

    Hi all,

After scouring this forum, my friend and I both ordered 3820tgs from ncix. We are hoping to overclock the 6550m gpu with the amd tool. Can someone provide us with some guidance on optimal overclock settings? I saw that with 5650m, you can get good results with 650/1050 and reasonable temps, havent seen any posts on 6550m.

    Thanks in advance

Congrats on the decision! I've had tons of laptops and must say that the 3820TG is the most exciting machine I've had so far, soo much mods and things can be done and a extremely active community around it! I would recommend using the MSI Afterburner instead. You loose the powersaving features (downclocking when idle) when using the AMD tool. The MSI Afterburner is based on a much more sofisticated code.

The 6550 is basically a 5650 running at 1.0V instead of 0.95V and at 600MHz instead of 550MHz, so I'd try the same basic settings. First, dl CPUID HWmonitor and watch your temps. Then you can use 3dmark06 or 11 to benchmark and stress test your settings.

725/1000 work well on my 5650, but some cards flake out at 650 / 900 so it's up to you. Watch for artifacts / crashing / overheating GPU.

It's actually 1.05v. I've had both models and the 6550 clocks like mad, at least my sample does. The max I got from the 5650 was 740MHz on core and 1100MHz on RAM. The 6550 I now have gives 880MHz on core and 1000MHz on RAM. If this can be translated in to improved tech is hard to motivate, but the difference is certainly bigger than what a 0.1v increase would give.

No problem with 6550m GPU overclocking on mine, I run a 770/1125 when playing with no artifacts or crash, and the temps are 90°C max. With these settings you can run Crysis 2 on native resolution in advanced graphics (the second option) smoothly.
Plus the CPU OC (i5-480m : SetFSB + ThrottleStop = constant 3500mhz on both cores in full charge) I got a max 3DMark06 score of 10650pts. But didn't notice much difference ingame.

I would advise you to always use the AC power when playing with GPU OC, I killed my 6-cell battery when playing on Battery.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I just got my tracking number so can't wait for it to arrive. What are acceptable GPU temps so that the longevity of my graphics card wont be too affected? Also, anyone have recommendations or words of wisdom on overclocking the i5-480?

    wow, thats really good.
    i also have the 6550m, but when i run crysis 2 at 700/900 my gpu-temp is at a constant 89-90C :/
have you changed thermal paste or something?

No I didn't, but I always keep some space under the laptop fans outpouts.
Now that I have the 9-cell battery I don't need anything to level up the back of the computer, and ambiant temp of the room is always around 20°C or less.
I say 90°C but in some games it could be more (like GTA IV), it depends, Furmark Burning will go upon 100°C. But with the games I play it rarely reaches 90-91°C.
I usually don't use CPU OC when 3d gaming.

hey guys i used setpll (thank you, great program) using m11xR2 @ 170 and it works great i can go higher but i don't feel i need more than 3.2 g when turbo fires up.

i did not disable turbo or do anything else and it works great.
i also over clocked the GPU using RivaTuner @ 940/999 and it's very fast.

my temps for CPU and GPU never go higher than 70c maybe for less than 1 sec sometimes and that is while playing call of duty 2 and black ops.
i used open hardware monitor to graph the temps while playing.

ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

i also made a small program to switch clocks for gpu and cpu.

Are you on SP1 with the stock drivers? There's an issue with Windows Live stuff for this combination that prevents installing SP1 via Windows Update... I'm on the modded driver mentioned above.

Btw. got a 8GB G.Skill Kit (F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ)... working with VMs is much more fun now :D

My temps got a little bit high in the last time and I decided to reapply the thermal grease (Artic Silver 5). I've noticed that at least one head sink got out of place... perhaps it wasn't screwed tight enough by Acer...

    ===Bluetooth===

Atheros Bluetooth v7.2.0.65 [TESTED - thanks ChasePack] [Updated] - Updated 29/3/2011

Just noticed - new Atheros Bluetooth drivers from Acer ( 100MB/ 199MB) for Windows 7 SP1, version 6.18.0624.0302. Can someone test both and see which one works and what difference both have? Even better, if the unofficial driver works then I can remove this entry entirely. Thanks :)

Broadcom Bluetooth v6.5.0.131 [TESTED] [Updated] - Checked 15/4/2011
Note 1: An old version of the Bluetooth driver must already be installed. The official driver from Acer works fine for this purpose.
Note 2: Bluetooth must be turned on during the installation. An error might occur during install and the installer will refuse to install anything. To install the drivers manually: Do not close the Bluetooth installer. Wait for it to fail, then when it leaves you at the page with 4 progress bars and says that installation failed, leave it there.
Go to C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\Temp\BluetoothBTW and copy the whole folder to desktop. Next open Device Manager, right click>update driver software for all Bluetooth devices except "Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator" and navigate to the folder you copied and check "include subdirectories". Wait for the drivers to install and you are done. You can close the installer after this.

    ===VGA===

ATi Display Drivers ( alternate link) and WatermarkRemover [TESTED] [Updated] - Updated 9/4/2011, includes ATi Display Drivers v8.831, CCC2 and Intel HD Graphics v8.15.10.2281. Extract the 7z file to C:\ and run install.cmd as Administrator. After installing, extract Watermark Remover anywhere and run the one appropriate for your system. This is to remove the watermark that you will notice at the lower right of your desktop the next time you restart.

Beta version: ATi Display Drivers and WatermarkRemover [TESTED]. Beta version, includes ATi Display Drivers v8.831, CCC2 and Intel HD Graphics v8.15.10.2321. Works fine, but brightness is set to lowest during and after install, a reboot fixes the problem.

Both updates compatible with Windows 7 SP1. You can install either of the drivers and Windows 7 SP1 update will appear in Windows Update. However it's still best to update Windows using the full installer, which can be found here.
    ===WLAN===

I noticed that for trackpad and wlan there are several options for drivers by different brands, when I update my laptop, will it depend on what hardware I have? Or can I use any of those ie) intel wlan or arthos wlan?

also, thanks too456 for your hardwork!

I can report static noise from the left speaker which is present all the time, both when 'idle' and not. It just started to make even worse sounds, like 'scratching' on a table or something similar. This is after the computer gets warm. The laptop is only 3 weeks old, so I can still RMA it. I will try out the Ubuntu on a USB stick first and see what gives.

Did run the v6.0.1.6316 and changed to v6.0.1.6029 with no change. I will try the v6.0.1.6343 if there is no sign of the static in Ubuntu.

Ok, static occurs in Ubuntu as well. Takes some 10min and then it shows its ugly face. It is actually quite similar to the HDD noise in patterns of the sound...can it be the crappy drive

You can try a software which was mentioned in the first thread that quietened the drives and see if that is the cause, or you can lift up your laptop and see if the noise is coming from the HDD there

No, I am 100% sure it is the speaker and static. I have just tried to remove the battery, the HDD and one RAM stick, booted into BIOS and the speaker still is giving static noise. I've also tried without the charger, with same result. I can imagine it is heat related and some component or solder has caved in.

EDIT: did test to plug in ear phones, still noise from the left speaker. It was dead silent in the ear phones though. This leaves me to believe that I have interference from some component. I have my wifi router just next to the laptop, have turned down the power from it and will se if it result in something.

It is available with synaptics (mine is). And it should be possible to replace the touchpad by hanging the circuit board I think

I Cant seem to Overclock my Gpu?

Is it possible to overclock the gpu with acer´s Driver?

Or do i need to download a modded ati driver or what?

I tried all kinda overclocking program but there is just not at Option to Raise the gpu Clock.

And trhottlestop what does that program do? i thought it was the memory that did wrong caluculations, seems that i cant go ver 162 now so i need to know if it is the memory or the cpu?

Are those Bybrid Drivers For the 5650 or the 6550?

I tried those drivers for my 6550m and it didnt work.

For overclocking, use this. As for throttlestop, I have no idea what you are talking about. Throttlestop configures your processor for different performance profiles depending on what you want to do, afaik it does nothing related to memory. The hybrid drivers should run fine on 5470, 5650 and 6550, assuming the creator of the hybrid drivers did his work properly and integrated the device ids of all 3 graphics cards. Are you sure you ran the install.cmd file and not setup.exe? Follow the instructions given.

I tried that GPU overclock. The new clockrate doesn't show up in Catalyst. Why is this?
