100/150 is the low power setting. That is default if you are not running anything graphic intensive. Our BIOS (5650) support Powerplay with few clock profile for different needs; 100/150, 300/300, 375/400, 400/800, 450/800 and the default 550/800. When you OC with MSI Afterburner, you will OC the default 550/800 (Clock Info 00). That clock profile will be used in gaming. As soon as I quit gaming, my GPU-Z indicates that the current clock profile fall back to 100/150.

amazing! on standard fan profile, with OC 780/1040 i got a gpu temp of ~94C after 10min ATI Tool. the gaming fan profile lowered this temp by ~7-8C to ~86C! (had the laptop laying flat, not leveled up)
thanks a lot for your work!

edit: just ran the same specs for 1h but with laptop leveled up and in a slightly colder room - gpu temp was on a stable 75C +-2C all the way through :)

    Hey all.

My laptop seems to freeze indefinitely midgame when I play BFBC2. This happens after I overclock the gpu and have the 3820tray running to prevent the temps from going too high. The highest temps (for anything) according to HWMonitor is 82 C. With that said, does anyone have the same problem or know the reason for this behavior?

Remove the overclocking, but let the applications run and test it again,

The overclocking or the apps let the game crash.

May i know in overall consenus, most users prefer their 3820tg to be equipped with gpu 5650 or 6550?

I asked coz in my country i can only find sets that comes with 5650 and i thought 5650 is a more inferior card compared to 6550? And this forum gave me an impression that most users prefer to have 5650,am i right? if yes,why the preference for a more inferior card(i.e 5650)?

All of the 4820TGs are out of stock and probably will be replaced with the new 4830TG. So, unless Microcenter sill has some in its stores, I think you're SOL. AFAIK, the only place to get the 3820TG (I5-480M/HD 6550) is from NCIX in Canada. The warranty is valid for the US though.

Well, the CAD is worth more than the USD right now, and there's a conversion fee. Also, NCIX had these laptops on sale for 699CAD for awhile, but it looks like the price went back up.

So Zsero nice Profiles.. So you say that both the Cpu and the gpu fan should run at around 75 % original on the aver 3820?

I tried you gamin profile and could see around 5 degress temperature drop on the gpu but nothing on the Cpu, and after i tried your gamin profile the gpu fan never shuts of ???

Is there a possibility that you can make a Profile that´s as Quiet as possible on cpu and gpu under 60-65c and max both over 85c?? Would be perfect because now the gpu an never shuts of ! my gpu is on 50c now and it´s still pretty loud !

And guys i´ve tried applying the mx3 thermal with no result, gave me nothing maybe 1 Degree on the gpu ! even sandpapered it with a 4000grid ! wich is as close to mirror edge as possible..

Is the ic7 really that much better then the mx3 because i saw the mx3 had 8,2w and the ic 7 had around 4 something.

    any Ideas?

The thing with the profiles is that there is just not enough detail in them to customise them properly. So if you want a profile which keeps the GPU cool starting from 65 degrees upwards, that same value will have an effect when going downwards, to say 50 degrees.

Try the balanced profile, or just create a shortcut icon for profile_quiet.bat and profile_gaming.bat and click them before and after gaming. The only side effect what I know about is that Fn + F3, F5 ... keys only work after the first restart. But for gaming you don't really need Fn keys.

I personally choose to switch profiles more than once a day. It works really well for me.

I'm glad it works. I always use every laptop with its back raised by a few centimeters. Makes a huge difference in temperatures and puts less strain on the components.

I think people here don't prefer 5650 necessarily. They usually discuss about 5650 because most people who have a 3820TG have it with 5650. 6550 was released just a few months ago.

6550 is just a renamed 5650 with more clock.
If the price is the same you can go with the newer one, but if you have a good discount for the older, why not?

NCIX will not honor a price match of $699, let alone the $650 price floating around.

NCIX has only ONE 3820TG in stock as of 20mins ago.

Seems price is a little high because the 3820TGs are finally being sold off. Kinda sad... Although who knows because everyone was a flutter to get the 5650 TGs back in January because everyone thought that they were the last of the 3820TG stock. Then a month or two later stock with the 6550 showed up.

My friend missed the 3820TG $699 sale by a few days and the NCIX price went back up. They found a legitimate Canadian site that still sold them for $699 so they tried to price match but it was declined. When they called NCIX, NCIX said some BS about $699 being under cost and they only have promotions if companies are willing to reimburse them the difference. NCIX counter offered $730 and they took it cause stock was so low.

I'm not even sure if NCIX has any stock left, they only had 1 left last night when I looked.

    Maybe you''ll have better luck

would battery life be a lot worse if i changed my HD (5400rpm) for a momentus xt (7200rpm, hybrid) ? i'm finding my 5400rpm a bit slow, but ssd is.... too expensive for me :D

You can check the voltage differences in the specs sheets of the hard drive you have currently and the momentus xt, but imho the scorpio black is better than the momentus xt in the price to performance performance ratio, and its way cheaper too :)

I can vouch for the scorpio blacks being very fast. Tossed one into my old Lenovo S10 and the difference was VERY obvious. Much faster boot times, load times etc.

Did the install of 5.0.6 Launch Manager and confirm it works too on my Acer Aspire One netbook.

Interesting note is that while 5.0.6 was rated 64 bit, it works fine for the netbook whereas the newer 5.1.4 (for 2nd gen Aspire One) did not fix the wifi on by default problem.

You can´t compare Scorpio Black with Momentus XT. After 5 boots the Momentus XT will boot close to SSD while Scorpio Black will boot at best with a desktop 7200rpm HDD speed. It´s a great drive but I find the only 30 USD price difference versus the Momentus XT 500gb a great deal in favor of Momentus.

In my country the Momentus XT costs SGD200, but the Scorpio Black SGD102. I wouldn't pay twice as much for that kind of speed, which is why i specifically stated price to performance ratio and not pure performance.

Ive heard that the 3820tg only supports PC3-8500 ram, and when I used Newegg's ram finder tool it pointed me to the PC3-8500 ram. When I bring up cpu-z though, it shows that I have Nanya Technology PC3-10700 ram installed stock. Is this just a mess up or does the 3820tg support PC3-10600/10666/10700?

    EDIT:

The ram seems to be running at PC3-8500 speeds (1066 Mhz) when I look at the memory tab. Weird that Acer would put un(fully)supported ram in their laptops stock.

These RAM modules fully support the specifications of your laptop. 1333MHz modules will run at the maximum speed of 3820TG which is 1066MHz, and with better latencies. There is nothing bad in what Acer did with your laptop, since modules have a table with their supported frequencies.

The motherboard fully supports 1333MHz, but because of Intel's arbitrary limitation, your RAM is forced to run at 1066MHz for all i3 or i5 processors.

Finally got my 6-cell battery!! The laptop looks so sleek now, very pleased.

Perhaps it's time for that SSD now... shame the 3820TG doesn't have an eSATA port for external HDD.

Can anybody recommend any "slim" / small formfactor power bricks?

I quite like the one on my work Lenovo laptop, here's a comparison: http://i.imgur.com/vNUKz.jpg

I am using the 32bit version of Firefox, so this cannot be the reason. Also, since the old version works fine then the only reason would be a faulty build.

It can, so long as the AC adapter you're planning to use has the same wattage, voltage and amps, which is 90W, 19V and 4.74A respectively. Of course, AC adapters with lower specifications can be used, but the battery will charge more slowly, and during heavy loads, the AC adapter may not be able to supply the laptop with enough power.

I'm trying to use an AC Adapter with same voltage and higher amperage (19V 6.3A) but it's not charging nor is it beeping to say that it's plugged in. I heard the newer Acers have AC Adapters with a green tip? Is that required to charge now?

Looks like the 3830TG is coming to the US this time. The Press Release says 3830TG, 4830T and 5830T. The 5830T is already listed on the Acer US site. At $599, it should be competitive as a basic business machine. The 3830TG lists for $779. Decent price. Should make this unit very competitive.

At 4.12 lbs the 3830TG needs to go on a diet.

The amperage may be too high for the power board to handle, so it will not charge I guess. The green tip has nothing to do with the ac plug, it's the size of the plug that matters. The laptop will only beep if it is on and booted into Windows, if it is off then no beeps will sound. You can check the light next to the power indicator on the bottom to see if it is charging. Orange/blue will indicate that it is charging/charged respectively, if it is off then it is not charging and the adapteor you're using is not suitable.

The battery seems to be smaller in the x830 compared to the x820 series (6000mAh vs 6600mAh. Any idea if the power consumption will be lower for the x830, or it will no longer hit the magical 8 hour milestone?

Just now I also tried to use a 65W (19V 3.42A) AC Adapter and that didn't work either. Both adapters have been tested working so I know there's nothing wrong on that end.
Are you sure the green tip has nothing to do with it?

I was in Windows when I tested out whether it was beeping or not. Both AC Adapters are a no-go when the laptop is off as well.
