I invited bladrak over from the tweaks thread, (has nothing to do with tweaks):
OK, go into the BIOS when the computer STARTS. Press F2 quickly. Then when you are in, tell me those numbers.
-
Green tip on the plug or on the power brick? If you mean the green light on the power brick, I have another spare ac adapter without the green light and it works fine. As for a green tip on the plug, my plug is not green in colour, so it should not be the cause either.
-
what numbers?
Just for info, ive managed to update my bios to the latest : 1.19
im running a 3820T on W7 SP1 x64
my graphic card is an intel chipset
My problem: since i cleaned the inside of my computer (and maybe did other things like install acer epower, sp1 ect) my fan is working full time and doing a hell of a noise.
I am also encoutering freeze : my UC goes up to 80 sometimes 100% while im only using firefox. Right now its at 50% and ive disable every programs from startup through msconfig.
Ive tried to unninstall SP1, and epower management from acer, it didnt change a thing
EDIT:
VGA 1994
BIOS V1,19
KBC 01,15 -
I don't think the color has to be green. I just heard that the new Acers have a newer plug with a third pin in it that makes it different from older plugs.
FWIW the plug on my AC Adapter is literally green. -
This is the thread where I saw the info about the newer plug.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/438308-acer-1410-ac-power-adapter.html#post5727247 -
ok ive understood what numbers you meant, i edited my previous post with KBC VGA and BIOS
Ive also done every malware test and nothing was found so far. My windows update is top notch
I really dont know what to do except unbild my laptop again :<
please help me ! i slept 4 hours ahah
-
Your BIOS numbers are all OK.
I would start with a CLEAN Windows 7 reinstall. Then the ONLY thing you need to install from Acer is Launch Manager. Do NOT install anything else. Do NOT install ePower manager.
I have seen many computers installed from modified Windows 7 sources suffering from CPU always on 100% issues.
If you have access for a Windows 7 SP1 source, I would suggest using that. There are new ones updated by Microsoft just a month ago. Use those. The one you want to look for is:
Source: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/default.aspx?pv=36:350Code:Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (x64) - DVD (English) File Name: en_windows_7_home_premium_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_676549.iso Date Published (UTC): 5/12/2011 2:34:16 PM Last Updated (UTC): 5/12/2011 2:34:16 PM SHA1: 6C9058389C1E2E5122B7C933275F963EDF1C07B9 ISO/CRC: 4A182640
Just google search for the file name, and download what you find. Because you have the legal sticker at the bottom at your computer, as well as the Windows 7 license in your BIOS, you can just use any official source and activate it with ABR Backup (if you have backed up the factory activation). -
ok thanks im gonna do that !
Launch manager is for the special key at the upper left of the computer ? its like a shortcut no ? i never really use it
other thing, i only have acces to a USB KEY, its big so no worries but how do i make it work ? do i just copy what i have downloaded into the key ?
Thanks again anyway !
edit: ive found a tutoral for usb key
Zsero, if i dont install any drivers from the acer website, where do i get those who wont be on the win7 cd? -
mark2000,
i got the tip from cowithgun some posts back.
he suggested using the new Launch Manager (for 3830tg) that actually solved the problem of choosing wifi off by default. this driver is 64bit as indicated on the file name after you download it.
the link to download is as below

Amazon.com: AcBel Ultra Slimmest & Smallest Laptop AC Adapter for Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG 3820T 4820T 4820TG 5820T 5820TG Series NoteBook PCs (Worldwide Safety Certificate with 3 years Warranty) + Free All-in-one Universal Plug Adapter: Electron
Both x820 and x830 has 66.6Wh battery..
x820 has 6000mAh battery. -
Read back a few pages for the newest drivers. But as far as you have tried a clean windows as well as updated to your newest BIOS/KBC, I think you have done everything to check if its a software or a hardware problem.
I think that if the fan works constantly even after all these things, it is a hardware problem and I would send it to Acer for a warranty service. -
this AC adapter is really cool
USNA 95 - Cooler Master
work fine on 3820tg !! -
Try ANTEC SNP 90 or Cooler Master USNA 95. I have antec snp 90 it work.
-
Hi all,
Bit of a warning to you -
Tried to install the latest catalyst drivers on my laptop using THIS method.
Trying my best to restore it now (initial system restore failed due to disk errors...), but just a warning to anybody willing to upgrade, any help would be appreciated of course.
SOLVED: Could be because I didn't run the install package as administrator. Modded hybrid drivers installed fine
Thanks to Alien9.
-
Nice find, does it work properly when laptop is under full load on the gpu and cpu? Just wondering how many Wats does standard 3820tg AC adapter have?
-
90w for the standard adapter "ADC-90CD" that I got with mine.
-
it works. it stays cool and make no noise !!
-
Drivers stickied on first page.

Nice one, just one thing (which I don't know if it's important) but it's not clear on your link is to run the file install.cmd as adminstrator. This will launch setup.exe.
Thanks. -
That's for 11.3. For 11.5 the install system is completely revamped.
PS Bronsky the download links were already on my drivers listing a long time ago
-
Thanks for finding this! Going to pick one up today.
BTW They're on sale at Canadacomputers (for our Canadian friends) today! -
Your links pointed to 11.3 - I actually installed 11.3 as well because I found the same thread you found but didn't realise 11.5 was out already.
The latest hybrid drivers are available here (at the bottom of the thread is the beta version 2) and it's a full .exe file, no more installer.cmd. Grafiktreiber (ATI/AMD) & Hybrid (ATI/AMD + Intel) & Realtek Audio Treiber + HDMI >>> Beta Tests - Acer-Userforum.de
Or here (direct link to the exe): Zippyshare.com - ATI_11.5_W7x64_Alien9_Hybrid_v2.exe
Hope that helps!
Edit: just did an uninstall of 11.3, hope that 11.5 installs fine... will report back
Edit 2: got a BSOD upon installation of 11.5... I wonder what I'm doing wrong... trying again.
Edit 3: looks like I probably needed to uninstall the c++ 2010 redistributable... lets see if it works this time.
Edit 4: OK, so everything just went black after it installed... I let it finish for a while and shut down the computer properly (pressed the power button, heard the shutting down sound). Erm... I think it works now. Wouldn't recommend this method really.
And Edit 5: F*** this... it hasn't fixed the graphics issues I initially set out to fix.
I guess we're still waiting for a formal driver? (unless I'm mistaken and there is a way for this to work without installing the hybrids)
Final edit: it's working now (as per edit 4) FYI my original issues were that my settings in the CCC were set to performance over quality. -
Once, you have given up on the modded drivers you can have a try with BIOS switching and the latest official drivers. Just uninstall everything first.
-
Might do that... the modded drivers seemed like the cleanest solution, but now I'm starting to wonder otherwise.
I could mod the bios and run the Intel and ATI driver installations separately...
EDIT: Right... so it seems like I'm the biggest moron. But this is working now as per above (hybrid drivers when all ATI stuff and c++ 2010 redistributable is uninstalled). The issue I had with the graphics (card) was that my 3D settings in the catalyst control centre - I had performance instead of quality. -
Hi guys
I've two questions:
1- Is it possible use ax external FullHD monitor/tv keeping OFF the ATI vga in order to save battery life?
2- Is it possible start viewing the video output on the external monitor immediately after power on the laptop?
Thanks -
I am very sure I posted the link to 11.5 a few weeks ago in the same driver update post
And there's a specific set of instructions to follow, you may not have followed it properly because mine works fine on Catalyst 11.5.
edit: see thumbnail attached, 11.5 works fine with switchable graphics still enabled.Attached Files:

I'm using Launch Manger 6.0.2 which I grabbed thru some recent Acer laptop drivers... I don't like how it boots with wi-fi switched on every time, but I don't want it off, either.
Is there a version that would remember the last state? -
Use 5.0.6. Find it in the driver listing, link on the first page.
-
1) Yes. You can switch graphics as you would when using the the built in LCD screen. (edit: This only works on VGA.. HDMI apparently does not work on the intel GPU)
2) Yes. If the VGA/HDMI is plugged in before booting the computer, it should automatically display the login screen for windows on the external display. You may need to plug it in once while the computer is running and switch it manually, but for me it now seems to "remember" this setting and always displays the login screen on the external display. However, the actual booting process (BIOS and whatnot) is displayed on the built in LCD; not sure if there is a way around that. -
hdmi does NOT work on intel !!!
-
Didn't realize that! Sorry about that.
-
Looks like the 3830TG, I5-2410M/GT 540M is available in the US. Frys has them in-stock and shipping for $779. http://forum.notebookreview.com/7586469-post1149.html
The 13" Timelines finally come to the US. It's about time or maybe a generation too late.

Alright, I believe you! Just didn't see it I guess
11.5 working fine with me now... I uninstalled the C++ 2010 redistributable and the original ATI drivers. Then rebooted and installed. Everything is OK now
My original issue (and I was dumb enough not to realise!) was that my 3D settings in the CCC were set to performance over quality. Which caused crappily rendered textures: comparison, before and after. -
Looks like my dream laptop has arrived. Basically take everything about our 3820TG and upgrade it. I hope it costs $2000+ so that I can stop salivating.
Aluminum/magnesium construction, IPS display, relatively powerful hardware (Core i7, GT 555M) in a thin and light design, clean black look with narrow bezel... all of the above, please!
All it needs is a backlit keyboard... also I can't imagine battery life is going to be very good... -
Sure look attractive to me too. But look like only has 1 fan. Might have to benchmark the heat first.

No you're not using the latest driver. The latest driver is 8.85.6 but you only have 8.85.0, which is Catalyst 11.4. You still did something wrongly
-
Anyone had any luck safely wiping the fingerprints off the lid of the lappy? I don't want to do anything that will damage or scratch the surface but using just a microfibre cloth doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
-
I spray some spectacle lens cleaning fluid and then clean with the microfibre cloth, works wonders
-
WOW, now THAT is the first notebook what I think is an upgrade over the 3820TG. OK, I would include the Sony SA too. If they are going to cost about the same as a Lenovo X220, then they could be real alternatives for someone dreaming about portable + IPS + discreet graphics.
-
Haven't been here in a while but just thought I would post an interesting finding...
Just bought a toslink cable for my 3820TG to connect it to the digital input of my Logitech Z-5500 (I know this is by no means an audiophile system) and jesus. The clarity is phenomenal. The analog output of this laptop truly does suck when compared to digital.
-
Hey guys, I'm having a torrid time with my 3820TG and I hope you guys can help me out (noob).
1) My ATI Mobility Radeon 5650HD keeps disabling on its own everytime I start up. (As seen in Device Manager) and I always have to enable it.
2) I can't seem to set my brightness anymore with or without the hotkeys.
Any idea what's wrong? Thank you so much for the help, my exams are getting close and this is really annoying. =( -
The hotkey disfunction makes me think you have a problem with the Acer/ATI driver. Download the latest video driver for the 5650 from the acer site, remove your current driver and install the fresh one. See if that helps.

Hey Bronsky, thanks for the reply!, but I had already installed all the latest VGA drivers for both the Intel and Radeon cards. The Radeon card still seems to be disabled upon startup.
-
hey bronsky, I´ve bought a 3820TG top of the line with i5 + 6550, do you think the 3830 is better? if i´m not mistaken the 30 weights much more.
-
Well, not Much More, 100 grams more, 3820 is 1.8 and 3830 is 1.89 Kilos.
I personally went for 3820 because it was cheaper, I like ATI video cards way more, plus in my opinion they are better when overclocked (had some issues with NVIDIA in the past), and last but not least the 3830 has a throttling problem which I believe is still not fixed. -
i chose 3820tg for its dual vent ^^
-
but how about performance, 3830 hardware produce better results?
-
Oh my word...
Right... can't be bothered right now, but next week I'm going to try the method where you just disable the Intel graphics in the bios and run the general ATI installer.
This is ridiculous... don't even know why I'm having so much trouble hahah. I'm not usually a mong with computers. -
basically the GT540m is like 15% better than the 6550, not sure when we overclock.
3820's i5 does not throttle. Sandy bridge seems to have problems.
So I guess i'd stick with the 3820tg. -
Overclocked, the 3820TG is a match for the 3830TG. And once the 3830TG has been gaming for 20 to 30 minutes it'll get hot and start thermally throttling. I'd take the 3820TG or even 4820TG over the 3830TG any day.
