    Hello!
I jut wondering what kind of temperatures you 3820tg reach while under load and when idle? I gamed Minecraft today and discovered that my cpu temp was 98 degrees! Nothing is blocking the went, and the laptop was seated on a table. Right now my idle temps are 56 degrees for both cores, and 60 for the radeon card..

The temperature under load is way to high. Through cleaning of the vents is in order (using canned air aka gas duster). If that doesn't help re-applying thermal paste should.

If you start with gas-duster you won't have to dismantle the notebook but if gas-duster is not enough there's no other way than a thorough cleaning and re-pasting.

I need some help updating my graphics drivers. I recently (this weekend) updated my hard drive to a OCZ Vertex Plus 120 GB and my ram to 8GB, then ran WIE and got 5.0 in Windows Aero graphics score (6.2 Business and gaming graphics ) for my ATI hd 5470. This is a new install of Windows 7 Home Premium from my original recovery disks, with multitudinous updates from Windows update. I have tweaked windows power options and set hard drives to never turn off, and no hibernation, which was recommended for optimum SSD operation.

I would like to install new drivers for both the integrated and discreet graphics cards. Windows says that the drivers are up to date. I tried the driver update from Intel but when I used the utility, it wouldn't update, it said I had to contact my computer manufacturer. I tried searching this forum but it's getting long again, and I only found posts from last year on how to update the drivers and maintain switchable graphics, and the links took me to drivers that are newer than the ones in the posts.

The driver version I have currently is 8.713.3.3000 (for both integrated and ATI). Drivers are not available on acer's site any more, they say they only supply drivers that are not part of windows. So how do I update my drivers? Can I still change bios settings to discrete graphics and update my ATI driver? Also, I am still not getting the prompt for SP1 in Windows update. (I wish Acer would update their drivers...have they moved on? Newer computers are more important?)

This is a great forum, I have been on here a lot lately when my WD Scorpio Blue HD failed (I think due to hibernation issues with switchable graphics...great excuse to get an SSD, although I think I've finally got the 500 GB properly repaired and formatted again with tools from Western Digital's website...so if my SSD, which has questionable reviews, fails, I have this drive to play with until I get a replacement).

Thanks in advance for the assistance. :) If there are already posts that tell me how to update, please point me in their direction.

    Megan

On Acer's website, browse to the 3820TG driver downloads section and scroll down to the VGA section. There, you will find a driver called 'VGA driver' with version 8.771.1. Download that driver and extract it to a folder.

Next, you could choose the ever-so-slightly dangerous way and simply install the new driver over the old version. It works fine for me but it might cause problems. The safe way would be to uninstall using Control Panel (uninstall ATi Catalyst Install Manager > express uninstall ALL ATi software), reboot, then use driver sweeper to remove all traces of the ATi driver and then reboot again, install the new drivers, reboot one last time and you're done. The Intel driver gets uninstalled along with the ATi driver so you don't have to do anything about it. Hope this helps :)

is anybody using a 5GHz wlan card inside the 3820TG?

At my current location we are just running out of free channels at the 2,4GHz frequencies. 58 wlans at the moment.

For the record my i5 450M idles at 1330 (10x133) but when I overclock the FSB it idles at 1550 (10x155).

    'sup guys!

I just re-installed windows on my 3820, and it's going bat crazy.

    (i5 450)

At 20-30% load (while im writing this) i'm up at 70 degrees celcius on the CPU.

I tried playing some BF3 and my temperature skyrocketed to 92-93 degrees during the gaming session.

The fan goes on and of all the time, and it's beginning to be really annoying, i mean i bought the thing for it's ability to stay cool. So my question to you awesome dudes here with alot more knowledge then me, have I missed some basic driver or should i just repaste the heatsink/CPU? I have some arctic silver paste laying around here..

(would love to see a guide on how to do that paste'ing)

    Big ups from sweden!

A cpu load of 20 - 30% is to high for only web browsing and typing a message.

I'm running now between 3 and 8% cpu load.

    Check the running processes.

That's not really what it seems- it's .net optimization service which occasionally starts, uses hell lot of CPU and goes away.
Let it finish what it's trying to optimize and it will shut down on its own- your temperatures and load should go down then.

    downloads is right.

This happens afetr a new .net installation and/or after .net updates. It's generating a few binaries to speed up the net applications.

Oh, damn I feel like such a newb, noticed it now that it went down, but however, what temperatures do you guys have at some intense gaming? Anyone tried battlefield 3? That's still in like 90-ish somewhat degrees, I maxed at 95 once..

    Good day lads,

I'm currently running the 11.8 v2 drivers and they work fine when I am connected to a Monitor through HDMI, however when I try to switch to descrete graphics when in normal laptop mode, with external monitor and power off, the screen just turns black. When I switch to Intel graphics using the P button on the laptop the screen goes on again, but the graphics are obviously Intel then.

This is a common problem with the leshat 11.8 v1 and v2 drivers. I suppose he hasn't fixed them yet. You're probably best off installing 11.6 drivers. You can find em here:

BF3 is demanding. The Beta is also quite glitchy, putting even more strain on the system. Your temps are not out of line. My system, which runs very cool spikes to the high 80s in BF3 and may have crossed 90C from time-to-time.

I'm assuming that you have factory thermal paste.

Yes, I have factory thermal paste, I tried to open my 3820 up to try and localise my CPU but after loosening the first bolts i realised I didn't have the cohones to try peeling it up..

Exactly now after perhaps 45-50 minutes of gaming I peaked at 99degrees celcius. Bronsky, you don't know of any guide to re-applying the thermal paste on a 3820?

    Regards
    Ylvinger

Quick question, anyone know of a GPU temp monitor I can use as a Win7 widget or just in the system tray? One that doesn't require me to have any other GPU(OC) programs running at the same time?

I don't think so. There are color temperature adjustments but no core temp monitor... Not that I could find anyways. There could be an official AMD tray extension that adds the function but I haven't seen anything like that either. Also, most of the things I've tried so far don't monitor mobile AMD chips.

Sure I could download MSI afterburner or some other OC program and THEN get a GPU temp monitor tool but I don't OC so to me its pointless to have an OC program running the background if I honestly don't need it.

Like I said I obviously could be wrong, and that seems to be the case but I don't seem to have the same tray as everyone else. My drivers are 8.850.6.0 (from system devices) and the only tray tools I have are with AMD Catalyst Control Center.

When I use help to look for ways to display GPU temp all I get is instructions to go to a performance tab (which I don't appear to have) and AMD Overdrive (which I also don't appear to have).

I slacked half-a.. install for this Win7 and just got drivers from AMD and have been letting them self update. Seems Catalyst update is at 11.5 (which is weird because I'm pretty sure it self updated to 11.8 a while ago).

Maybe I'm running a standard AMD tray and tools when there are more specific ones for this mobile GPU. Not that I'd be to keen to change because every few days there seem to be new posts here with people needing help while installing GPU drivers. Stock or not...

On the first page of this thread is a link to the online manual for the 3820TG. There is a dissambly procedure with photos. It's great. I have a post earlier in this thread outlining my disassembly comments as well. The main thing that I do differently is that I don't remove the Wifi antennae completely, I only move them out of the way. Make sure to use the spread technique to maximize the heat sink connection.

If your inexperienced, it can be a challange. Don't be in a hurry.

If you still don't want to do it, any decent tech can repaste your CPU/GPU. They should not charge more than $50. IC Diamond 7 worked very well for me. Others have reported great results with other types as well (MX2 I think).

To avoid having to do anything, you might try elevating the back of your notebook by an inch or so. The airflow might be enough to avoid any invasive work at this point.

Search for the part number "BT.00907.013"

If you're in the US try this:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/7313568-post373.html

Mine shipped with a 9-cell, but I simply googled the 6-cell part number, found a shop in my country that sold it and got one shipped.

I actually took the chance and bought a 9000mAh on eBay for $89 including shipping. It really seems like original as stated and gives me a good 13 hours of batterytime working in documents. Wear after 3 months is 2%, so I'm happy. It seems like they don't sell the 9000mAh version longer though, and not to that good price either. :(

I've noticed that 3820tg parts have not dropped in price like you would expect. In some cases they are going up. I wonder if it is because nobody is selling their 3820's.
