The first thing I would check for is a firmware upgrade.

It's in the inf file. There's a section that when interpreted says that it will not install on Windows 8. I expect switchable graphics to not work with the restriction in place so you might have to make do with discrete graphics. However I have yet to look at the ATi drivers, will look at them later.

I just looked at the AMD driver in Leshcat's hybrid packages, it will not install on Windows 8 either. You might have to grab the AMD official Windows 8 drivers and live with dedicated graphics only.

hm, well i didnt get a change to install it over the weekend but it seems like i'll just have to wait for better video drivers or just test out windows 8 at some point with the dedicated graphics.

No, you cannot mod the timings as the bios does not support manual JEDEC timing overclocks

This looks like a decent deal but it is from Taiwan. An unopened (probably reissued or refurbed) 3820TG for $499. ACER TIMELINE X 3820TG, WIN7 ,I3-380M,13.3", 640GBHDD, 2GB DDR3, Free shipping | eBay

Actually, the 3820TG was not sold in the US. It was sold in Canada and most of us bought ours from a retailer in the great frozen north. Since the 4820TG was sold in the US, you can find some refurbs on Amazon or at Microcenter once in a while but they are rare. It is basically gone, but not forgotten. There is still nothing that tempts me to upgrade yet.

** I just realized I'm on the 3820TG thread... My apologies... Please keep that in mind while reading my responses. :(

I feel like this laptop is better than my UL30VT in pretty much every way... and I REALLY like my UL30VT... light... thin... good looking... amazing battery life... fast enough to do some light gaming. I feel like the 3830tg is a great upgrade even if it's not top of the line now.

    UL30VT-A1
    - CULV U7300 1.30 Ghz
    - 0.3mp webcam
    - nVidia G210 512mb - 3DMark06: ~3400 no o/c
    - Power plu on right side
    - 2 USB on right side, 1 on left
    - No USB 3.0
    - No SPDIF audio port
    = Backlight keyboard mod difficult
+ Glossy screen (installed a matte screen protector)
    = 10 hours battery life
    = 750gb hd
    - 8GB max ram 1066hz
    = 1366 x 768

    3830tg
    + i5 2nd gen sandy bridge processor
    + 1.3mp HD webcam
    + nVidia 540M - 3DMark06: ~8084 no o/c
+ Power plug on left side (so cord isn't in the way of the mouse)
+ 2 USB on left side 1 on right (so usb cords don't get in the way of the mouse)
    + Dynamic switchable graphics
    + USB 3.0
    + SPDIF audio
= Backlight keyboard mod just as difficult
= Glossy screen (will install a matte screen protector)
    = 10 hours battery life
    = 750GB hd
    + 8GB max ram 1333hz
    = 1366 x 768

** I just realized I'm on the 3820TG thread... My apologies... Please keep that in mind while reading my responses. :(

Thanks for your help on this! I kinda like the 3830 a bit more than the 3820 configuration wise. I'm hoping to get the 3830tg i5 2430M... I guess I will just keep my eyes open for one on the Canadian stores... I might have to settle for a refurb... Thank you!! :D

That or just relax with my UL30VT and wait for something else to come out... I'm not in a huge rush... but the 3830TG would def be an upgrade to the one i have now.

Actually its a 14 inch notebook with a 13 inch screen..

Gigabyte has super specs, but the build quality seems quite crappy (Its all very cheap plastic except for the lid)! You can see the ventilation openings on the back of the notebook though, so maybe cooling is efficient?

It has a fixed battery, but what bugs me even more is the build quality
    [IMG]

Just look at the video for the build quality at kurtcocaines link

Also, its said to run for 5 hours.. so probably in reality 3 to 4 hours? Weak battery -.-

Bullocks, the non-original keyboard I ordered from Singapore is to wide. What to do? Only some mm, which forces one of the sides not to apply correctly.

Hi guys, new member here and I'm picking up a 6 month old 3820tg later today. It's the i5 / 5650 / 640gb version. Now I'm pretty technical but I don't know where to start. So I've got a few questions..

I've tried looking but is there a somewhat recent up to date guide to a clean win7 install on here?

I've seen some stuff on hybrid drivers on here.. does that still apply? I'm not sure which ones I would pick up for win7 64bit/5650 and how to install them?

Also I'm interested in OC'ing the 5650.. whats the difference in the two overclocking programs? and 650/1050?

Also thinking about ram.. what timing does it need to be? will these work?

    Thanks for your help!

Known problem, the marvell controller needs a longer init time after a crash/unexpected power loss. The Bios of the 3820TG doesn't wait long enough for the SSD to finish the check. After a check the next start of the SSD should work fine as you have seen after the hard power reset.

Awesome thanks Bronsky for all the answers... though I've come across an unexpected problem.. turns out the model is the 3022 model with the 5470 512mb vid card.. since i was specifically buying this comp for the 5650 this is a big let down. Now I have 24 hours to figure out if I can make due with this or return it and buy a new 4830tg. But I'm reading a lot of bad things about the throttling of the new timeline.. Any opinions on the 3830/4830? Can I overclock the 5470 enough to run newerish games on low? ... Thanks again.

edit: i guess what im trying to ask is if buying a 3830 or 4830 for an extra $300 is worth the troubles with trying to get past the throttling issue to play games... ?

if i didn't want a thin light laptop i would go with the lenovo 470p that has great gaming preformance for a similar price... but the size/portability is pretty high on my list.

I'm not a fan of the HD5470. I would wait for the new M5 14" which should sell in the same price range as the 4830TG. http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...rchase-acer-aspire-timelineu-m3-released.html Should be available in a few weeks.

Hey guys, I'm in need of advice for my cousin. The OS on his laptop broke, I mean like totally, it wouldn't even load in failsafe mode (I suspect a sector on his HDD in some really critical part of the system died, but that's beside the point). We took out the HDD and low-level formatted it so it should be okay now.

The thing is he forgot his BIOS password and the 'ad-hoc boot select option' is disabled. So he's got no way of installing a new OS or flashing the BIOS. The only way around it that I could think of was unscrew the chassis till you get down on the MoBo and then disconnect the CMOS battery. But I was like, I'm not doing it cos I've never done it before. Please, somebody tell me you got a better idea...?

Does anyone know if you can output higher a higher resolution than 1920x1200 through hdmi? It says that's the max resolution on the 6550m page AMD Radeon? HD 6500M Series Graphics

But I thought hmdi 1.4 could output higher resolutions than that.

I decided to give your modded drivers another try today. And it gave me black screen like the last time. Last time I tried out last around 2 months ago. That's why, personally, I would not use modded drivers when it is unusable. I never have any type of this issue with acer's drivers.

The latest 12.2 UP5 drivers are working fine with my laptop. You have to clean the drivers using the driver cleaner included then install the driver and it will work fine. I selected the ATI HDMI driver and the Intel v8.15.10.2559 driver in addition to the AMD driver because Intel v8.15.10.2622 gave me problems in the past.

I did used their cleaner. Device manager showed vga displays. Try to get your laptop up from hibernation mode and see if you get a black screen. But I will try intel v8.15.10.2559.

Agree with Upabove; the latets 12.2 UP5 gives black screen when waking the computer up from hibernation.
I use the ealier Catalyst 12.3 Pre-WHQL UnifL which works good.

Hello, haven't posted for a while here.

I am out to date regarding my drivers for sure.
I own the 3820TG with the HD5650 and still have the stock drivers for it from Acer (8.7X).

Is it any good to install the recent Mobility Catalyst 12.3 ?

Is there any noticable performanceboost or any other positive aspects that may favor the new driver?

According to that verification tool, this notebook is not supported by the official drivers.

Whatever, you can still install it manually by switching to dedicated videocard in the Bios and just install the new driver over the old one.

Any other important upgrades for mainboard and the likes?

    Thanks

I downloaded the file "dell_new_2.edid" that dkh made from the following post:
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1479962&p=4&#r78

I changed the prefix on the "dell_new_2.edid" from .edid to .dat

Then I opened the .dat file in "Monitor Asset Manager" that can be found here:
EnTech Taiwan | Utilities | Monitor Asset Manager

With the Monitor Asset manager I created an .INF file and used that file to upgrade the Dell U2711 drivers.

I restarted the computer and voila! I can now choose 2560 x 1440 on the Dell monitor and it works like a charm, so far I have no problems what so ever running the native resolution on my Dell screen with my 3820TG through HDMI :)

No problems. I don't know all that much about computers but after 5-6 hours of trying to get it right I finally found a solution that worked, and now I'm a VERY happy man. I think the screen only runs on 35hz when using the 2560 x 1440 resolution, but thats not a problem for me regarding how I use the screen.

1)About Discrete mode in the bios, is it for the ATI gpu only? Cause thats what I am seeing currently. And is it safe to leave it this way. I do some light gaming and the Intel HD auto switching thingy is kinda annoying when plugging in the charger.

1.5)I somehow got it this way when I was trying to update the drivers. And in device manager, I only see the ATI under Display adapter in discrete mode. But in switchable mode only Intel under Display adapter. Weird.
Also, the ATI driver version 8.752.0.0 Is this the latest or is there a newer version I should download.

2)When in-game, the ATI gpu temp is around 70-80 is normal right? At 550/800 speed, not overclocked.

    Sorry if its abit long.

Edit: Finally managed to get it back to normal switchable mode.Followed the Stock Drivers to Latest Driver trick.

If you are using stock Acer drivers, you can just check on the Acer site for the latest.

Hi, thx for the reply. OK so I managed to install the latest ATI driver while on discrete mode but when I change back to switchable mode I cant use the ATI gpu. Also, while on discrete mode I tried to play some games but after a few minutes/seconds theres a click sound and the laptop shuts down. I know that it could be overheating but I didnt OC anthing and I'm even using a cooling pad.

And on the device manager under display adapter theres only Intel HD. Weird as I can still open up Catalyst Control Center but cant switch to the "High performance" GPU.

BTW my laptop is the i7 620m one.

Edit:Ok so now in switchable mode the ATI driver is showing up and it is 8.771.1.0. But it still auto shut downs after 5-10 min in a game.Gonna try re-installing the game to see if it works.

Sigh, I might just bring it down to the service centre since its still under warranty but what exactly should I tell them. The last couple of times I went there(BSOD) they just swapped the HDD and that took 2-3 working days...

I would run hardware monitor to check out the temps of the GPU when it is failing. That might give you some idea of what is happening.

Hey there guys, just curious if anybody has ever tried Dual-Booting Windows 7 and MacOS X ??? Need MacOS X for some application developement for Iphone, and I don't want to lose the Windows capabilities.
Has anybody tried it? Do you perhaps still have a tutorial link?
The problem with the 3820tg is that it has no drive ((( Which might be a problem with MacOS X.
