I have a small problem. I'm trying to use the intel only option (Through modded bios).

If i select the IGD option only, so the ATI card i disabled. I'm only able to run 1024x768 in win7 (64bit). I have tried both original intel drivers from acers website, and i have tried latest intel hd graphic drivers from intels website. None is working.

Further more i have tried uninstalling all ATI drivers, and intel drivers supplied in that original package from acers website.

No matter what i do, i'm still only able to run 1024x768 with the IGD only enabled in the hidden intel menu in bios...

    Hi guys,

My 3.5 year old 3820TG suddenly won't turn on.
Here is the situation before this happened:
    1. Plugged in my charger with the battery inserted in the laptop. I didn't push the power button yet so laptop is still off.
    2. Saw the blue light on for the battery with lightning indicator.
    3. Realizing that the laptop will be plugged in for a long time, I decided that I should remove the battery. So I pulled out the charger from the laptop and turned it over; removed the battery and put back the charger.
    4. I pushed the power button but the laptop won't turn on.
All these steps happened within 30 seconds.
Did I short out something? Is there a way to fix this on my own?

I don't want to scare you, but it seems like the motherboard is a goner. Happened to me too, but I was still covered by warranty.

    Hi

I just want to share some experience with finding the right 2×4GB DDR3-1066 memory modules for my 3820TG. Most of the offered choices for 3820T or 3820TG are either too expensive or discontinued (as both KAC-MEMH/4G and KAC-MEMJ/4G from Kingston are out of stock).

However, I found that Kingston's KVR1066D3S7/4G are working in our belowed (but very picky) laptop. So if you're planning to upgrade your RAM to 8GB, try to search for them as they are discontinued and they might become out of stock soon.

Kingston is offering KVR13S9S8/4 as an replacement for them, but they are NOT working. I learned the hard way - they passed thru BIOS test, but no OS (Win, Linux, even live distros) was able to boot. Don't even bother.

    Hello 3820tg owners,
Last week i had 2 accidents with my 3820tg first i damaged hdd, but it was still working, then probably i spilled some milk on it [ below 50ml], it was still working, but i wasnt using it for the next few days cause my hdd was broken. AND NOW its completely broken, it wont turn on like power button is not working...., charging led [ orange] is flashing while connected to power grid. I dissasembled my 3820tg [ even removed CMOS battery], and somehow it turns on when i plug the power supply to it [ without pressing power button, leds are flashing and i think navigating bios is also working, However screen is not working at all, and external display is also not detected. Because of that i would like to try to flash new bios with an usb stick, can anyone provide me with a guide how to to that - cause i cant see anything on the screen- like instructions etc.

no it does not, i tried both hdmi and vga cables , But while i was trying to fix the laptop i noticed two things:
    - once i saw acer logo so screen and one of the gpus works
    - laptop turns on only when cmos battery is removed (when i plug it to the power supply -power button is still not responding( pb led works, hdd led works , capslock led works,).

as i said before i think battery charging, keyboard and navigating in bios work fine however i cant be sure cause screen is black

Acer 3820TG 8GB RAM upgrades work, no problem
I personally bought a 2×4GB kit from Crucial in 2011 and it has worked daily with no problem at all since. Crucial, Memory Advisor™ Tool, Manufacturer = Acer, Product line = Aspire Notebooks, Model = Aspire 3820 TimelineX, Find it. The model Crucial selected (that I bought then) is now discontinued. It was CT1313170 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, EUR 55.99.

I have used Crucial upgrades 5-6 times over 15 years, they are apparently very reliable hence somewhat conservative; IOW their offers can be smaller than what is really possible, but they work.

    Acer 3820TG 16GB RAM upgrade?

Crucial Memory Advisor™ Tool recommends RAM only up to 2×4GB for the 3820tg. However that tool being known as reliable hence somewhat conservative, and remembering having seen in 2012 or 2013 a few people had upgraded their 3820tg to 16gb RAM successfully, I decided to upgrade to 16GB. Since Crucial didn't help me doing that, I ordered from Amazon.FR a Crucial BLS2C8G3N169ES4CEU Ballistix Sport Mémoire RAM DDR3 SODIMM 1600 MHz 16 Go Kit (8 Go x2) (105.15 EUR).

On Sat 08 Mar 2014 I shut down the 3820tg, removed the main disk (256GB SSD), rebooted, entered the BIOS where "Main" reported:

    - Total Memory: 8192 MB
    - Video Memory: 1024 MB

Then I shut down, removed the old 2×4GB RAM, inserted the new 2×8GB, but the reboot failed, with black screen saying:

    Phoenix SecureCore(tm) NB
    Copyright 1985-2009 Phoenix Technologies Ltd
    All Rights Reserved

    V1.19
210: CPU Variable MTRR configure failed
    ERROR
    Press <f1> to resume
    </f1>
    <f1>
Pressing F2 during next rebooting did NOT enter BIOS but returned the same result ("210: ..." etc)

In the parcel was a gloss paper saying something I hadn't seen anywhere before:

    • Crucial© Ballistix© Sport series - For mainstream users and gamers
    • Crucial© Ballistix© Tactical series - Improved speeds and latencies for entusiasts
    • Crucial© Ballistix© Elite series - Choice components, advanced speeds and timings for the latest platforms.
So, maybe I should have bought in the Tactical instead of Sport series?

Anyone has successfully upgraded their 3820tg to 16gb RAM? Or should I return the memory to Amazon? What do you think? TIA,

Arrandales are rated at 8GB Ram max but I know I've seen the I5s with 16GB functioning. The 3820TG is very sensitive to the type and even the brand of RAM that you add. I had to try a few different brands before I was able to upgrade to 8GB. Even G-Skill, my preferred brand, did not work. I think I had to use Kingston, which worked fine. I would return what you have and wait to see if any of the more recent owners (I sold mine almost 2 years ago) have done it successfully. My guess is that you're in a trial and error mode. BTW, you have a great little notebook there. The 3820TG was one of the best purchases I've made.

    Hi,

is there a solution for the backlight error available by now when switching from Intel to AMD graphics meanwhile? I tried to set the FeatureTestControl to FFFF, but still black when switching. I'm on Win 8.1. Thank you for your help :)

Hi my laptop is running very hot lately, the GPU in particular is reaching 114c when playing TitanFall on Low graphic details. Is there anything i can do to alleviate these issues? How can I control the fans? does it need better thermal paste on the GPU and the CPU?

Sorry I should add im running windows 8.1 64bit with the 450m i think and the 5650 HD.

If you have never changed the original thermal paste then you will definitely see some improvements if you do it.

Be aware though that our lappy is a pain to service, you have to take the motherboard out to reach the chips and cooling assembly. Try to do a deep cleaning of the fans first and check for improvements.

The fan profile modifier was also quite useful, there should be a link in the 1st post

    Hello everyone!
My Acer 3820tg started to get blue screen fatal errors when on discrete graphics.
First I thought it was overheating, but changing the thermal paste did not solve the problem.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
I'd try to change the graphics drivers but now I don't know which ones I should install - do you know which Leshcat version is latest and stable for the 3820tg?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Actually every time I tried the Leshcat drivers I would get blue screens. So now I disabled the graphic switching on the BIOS and just use the discrete all the time with the latest AMD drivers.

This way you can use the amd auto installer and at least for me its very stable at the cost of reduced autonomy and no brightness control

ok brilliant, I might send it to a trusted shop with the service manual. Might try the fan profiles first though!

Also would this ram be compatible with our notebook? Its 1333mhz but its only 4gb.

    Hi there,

i read this Thread since the very begining. It has been a great help for OC and certain issues i had.
After i got the Laptop i made a clean install of Windows 7 which is running since August 2010.

Now i ordered a SSD (Crucial m500 - 240gb) which should performe nicely with the SATA II controller.

With that Hard Disk change i want to try Windows 8.1. So my Question is: Where can i get the latest Drivers?
The Drivers from the Acer HP are mostly from 2010 and 2011 and only for Windows 7 - 64bit available. Do they work with 8.1? For GPUs i will go with the newest Lashcat drivers.

Maybe there is a package with all Win 8.1 Drivers available?

    Thanks for your help!
    Greetings from Germany :hi2:

    SeS

/E: During the Win 8.1 installation should the GPU set to "discrete" or "switchable" in BIOS?

Hey! I have had the same problem. Out of the blue my 3820TG freezes and BSODs. First i thought also temperature, but it's ok. And then I tried to switch to discreet form in BIOS, and it worked quite fine for a week. And then they started again. I have noticed that they happen more with mozilla open, espescially when whatching videos or using macromedia flash.
    Any thoughts?

Have/had same issues, they were much worse before. With this computer if you by any chance use Zonealarm and/or AVG antivirus you'll get bluescreens. Took me two years tot figure out, since I had two identical 3820tg and both with exact same issue. If you have both, uninstall one to fix 90% of the issues, possibly uninstall both to fix both issues.

Hi, my laptop won't turn on (my case is also posted on page 336). Got it checked at a repair center and they said that the motherboard needs to be replaced. They said that they cannot find a new motherboard for my specific model. They found a motherboard they could use but I would need to downgrade from i5 to i3.
    1) How can I know the specific model of my motherboard?
    2) Where can I buy new motherboards online? Bought my laptop in Singapore.
    3) Is it worth it to have the motherboard replaced? Laptop is 3.5 years old. Average use. Motherboard costs $250.

    TIA

Motherboard also died. I changed, but I had planned to change a few months later anyways.

I don't get why you would need to downgrade your cpu though, it's the same socket, I even think it's the same TDP.

They are identical MBs. The socket is the same and, if you can solve the heating issues can even accommodate a quad cord arrandale CPU. My second 3820TG was a Canadian I3 model. I ran it with an I5-540M overcooked to 3.66ghz. On the other hand putting $250 into a 5 year old design is something to think hard about.

The only one of the three that has accurate information is the first. The mainboards are different for the TG model and the T. The second and third ads use the models interchangeably. Only the first id's the GPU. I would want the 6650 if I was replacing a mobo.

Hi, maybe a bit off topic, but any good replacements for this laptop? The 3820TG was just overall the best and cant find anything nearly as good as this was at the time. Considering the value for money + the epic 9 cell battery. Thanks :)

I think the Acer Travelmate P645 is a worthy replacement for the venerable 3820TG. IPS FHD display, AMD 8750M dedicated GPU, backlit keyboard, travelmate build and good looks.

Here in Norway we have two alternatives around the same price spot in the market as the 3820TG had when it was released.

Asus UX32LN, Nvidia GT840M, FullHD IPS screen, dual core i5/i7. Great system, but a bit shorter battery time (still managed to get over 10hrs of watching movies when wifi was off!) than 3820TG.

Macbook Air, Great and thin system with battery runtimes around what 3820TG had with 9 cell. Bit dated screen and intel HD5000 GPU not that powerful.

I still have my 3820TG, battery still going strong after years of use!
But use it rarely now that I got myself Asus UX32LN, the screen is miles better. The 3820TG screen was one of its few weak spots.

Thanks! Looked into the Travelmate, like everything about it, but atleast here in Estonia, its a bit pricy, they are asking around 1500 euros for the model with dedicated GPU. But the travelmate looks like its more like a business class laptop too, so its probably worth it, but a bit too expensive for me :(

Thanks, the Asus UX32LN looks nice too. Definately not getting the Macbook Air though :)

So a few monts ago, the HD5650 died in my beloved 3820TG. Luckily, it had the modded BIOS, and was able to swich to intel only, so the machine is still usable but it's time to move on :( . I've found the Acer X450LD , wich is in my budget (600$ /w i3-4010U, GT820M 2G), It looks nice, I can upgrade the CPU later, and I would pop my Samsung 840 from the 3820 so the performance should be OK, but i've read bad things about the X450 series build quality... Anybody has some experience?

I upgraded my 3820TG to Samsung EVO 250GB SSD drive. When I tried to refresh the Windows Experience Index, it crashes and gives me a BSOD. I can't get a screenshot since it'll just reboot itself after a few seconds. The SSD runs fine normally though, only on rare occasions, it'll lock up.

BRONSKY!!! Still here in the 3820TG thread. Awesome to see. Now I'm sad I've been gone so long. I still have my 3820TG, i5, 6550. Although it'll soon be repurposed, it's still going strong and working as good as ever :)

Today I was forced to make a quick decision on a new machine and pulled the trigger on a:
    Lenovo Y510P I5-4200M 15.6in Notebook FHD 16:9 6GB DDR3 RAM 1TB HHD+8GB SSHD SLI 2XGT755M 2G Win8.1
So I'm moving into that thread for a while as I upgrade the CPU and word is some of these laptops come with a M.2 slot even if the don't come with a drive in them. So fingers crossed I get one.

Lastly, if I don't, I remember a guy here years ago soldered a M.2 connecter to the MB of a 3820TG in the place it's suppose to be. Do you rember that, was it real, or am I remembering something else?

I drop around once in a while to see how everybody's doing. If I see the thread bumped, I'll look see if there is something I can offer. Most of the post-W8 stuff I have no idea about. My 3820TG has been gone over 2 years now. It was such a great notebook. I think Acer fell into a malaise soon after that design and appears to be back on track again these days.

Jeesh, I'm gettin sentimental over here. Not over your post really but over the laptop. I've been using a different one as my daily device for almost a year now and the 3820TG doesn't see much love. So sad. I don't get sentimental over much but I can see the life of that laptop as if it was a member of the family. So many good times and happy memories gaming on it...

Hi. It's me again. Pardon my ignorance as I am just a general laptop user.
Got the motherboard replaced and the laptop is running again. However, the fans are not working. The left fan spins at startup but stops once in Windows.
Also, my wireless adapter is not working.
By the way, I tried to update the BIOS with V1.19 using the link from this forum and I get the following error:
"A different BIOS model is installed in your computer."
    "Flash BIOS Fail. (0x4D0)"

    System BIOS Info
    BIOS Vendor: Phoenix Technologies LTD.
    BIOS Version: V1.19
    CheckSum: 0xC5A5

    New BIOS Info
    BIOS Vendor: phoenix
    BIOS Version: V1.19
    CheckSum: 0x83CE

Hope you could tell me what I need to do.

Is my 3820 going to die?!? :) he has been all over the world India Thailand sailed across Caribbean Islands and hiked south america with me :)
I've got i7 620m and evo250 ssd upgrade in january, but I have seen few lock ups this week, just freeze no BSOD, well the system was heavily loaded with high poly 3ds studio max 2014 file and some times rarely the screen gets washed out colors. for a few seconds or so. maybe ATI 5650 is dying? drivers from acer support 8.771
is there a bios mod for dedicated graphics swith off? would be worst case scenario in case of video death, as I still havent saved money for asus ux32ln or ux303ln :)

Did you put the thermal paste on yourself? Did you use a non-conductive for the GPU?
