hi guys, just got a 3820tg and ran 3dmark06 and obtained a score of ~7900 points without overclocking anything or performing a clean install of windows. This seems to be somewhat higher than what the reviews have been reporting (~6700). Is this score of ~7900 normal? my gpu is the hd 6550 and not the hd 5650 is that makes a diff, and I am running the free trial version of 3dmark06.

    6550 = Oc 5650

    Disregard him lol.

    This is what: with i5 460M + 5650, unOC score = ~7600.

    i5 480M = 100 MHz CPU clock increase
6550 = 50 MHz GPU core clock increase

Those increases result in ~300 3DMark06 score increase for you.

Despite that, really, both those increases can be matched with CPU OC (setFSB) + GPU OC (MSI Afterburner, AMD OC tool, etc), since i5 480M = i5 460M, and ATI 6550 = ATI 5650, physically.

You'll get into the mid 8000s easily by overclocking the GPU. It'll add 2 to 4 fps to most games. I can get to 8600 by oclocking my 5650 to 650/925 or so, and that's not all that extreme. Use a hardware monitor program to track your temps while running games and if the temps start to get over 90C back off. My CPU runs at 86C and my GPU at 84 when running Crysis while overclocked. My fps goes from 24 or so to 27 or so.

Heck look at my sig, I got a 5820TG with i5 460M and 5650, to ~9300 with a semi-high overclocking of 5650 to 715mhz/1040mhz. I did not even OC my CPU.

You could and probably should OC yours past 9500 without stability / heat issues, by that logic (that your base stock scores are ~300 higher than mine).

well since ur laptop is of a bigger size i wud assume the gpus can b OC'ed to greater extents since cooling shud be better.

No. The 3820tg has a better cooling system than the 5820tg

    Like Kirrr said, you're wrong.

The 3820TG has some of the best cooling built into a laptop available. It has 2 fans each spinning on CPU / GPU separately (one of the fans takes up the area where bigger laptops have the disc drive).

Almost all other laptops you can buy only has 1 fan that tries to cool both CPU and GPU at the same time, including the 4820TG and 5820TG.

    oic...

now that i think about it ya...i can play modern warfare 2 for like 1-2 hours and my laptop literally cools down in less than 5 minutes. 3820tg is pretty godly in terms of heat and fan noise (VERY silent).

only thing thats holding me back from overclocking my gpu is i dont want to increase the charge time of my laptop. the 3820tg already takes decades to charge up, dont want it to take any longer due to a faster spinning gpu. i know i can manually switch back to intel but i dont wana go thru 2 black screens and i dont know how to disable the auto switch integrated into acers. dont wana overclock teh cpu either coz that would reduce my battery life.

    ;)

    ...some laptops have 3 fans.

Some have 1 and will cool 120w TDP quite well.
