What do you guys think about the 4820TG vs the Asus K42JV-X1? Right now it's only available on Newegg, and no reviews anywhere to be found, but here are the specs:
Intel Core i5 450M(2.4GHz)
Screen 14" 1366x768
4GB DDR3
500GB 7200RPM
DVD Super Multi
NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M 1G DDR3 VRAM
The 4820TG i3 is available near where I am, but I'd like an i5. -
I looked at that but reviews weren't that great, plus 5650 is a little better than 335M. I'm also pretty sure 4820TG will last longer on battery.
Do you guys know how easy / hard is it to return laptops with store M? I might just get one and use it for a couple weeks to see it for myself. -
If you want the I5 and are buying now, this is the obvious choice. This is only a refresh of the N42 so I would expect that it would perform as well as its predecessor. The GT335M is a great GPU for this size laptop. The keyboard will probably be better than the Acer and this unit comes with a 1 year accidential damage warranty. On the down side, it is as heavy as the 4820TG without a metal cover, it is half an inch thicker, it costs $100 more and the 4820TG has a slightly better GPU. This is really a close call. Looks like a great computer. Asus is allegedly coming out with the K43 soon and may have the N82 here as well. They would have some more style than the K42JV but would probably not out-perform it significantly (the K43 will have a new 4xxM series GPU).

There is a 15% open box fee. So that will be $120-129 out of your pocket if you return it.
-
Well either people are returning theirs to MC or they just got in another shipment because the stock jumped up! Heres to hoping they are offered online from Tdirect and amazon sooooonnnN!
-
Haha. It's the later. When I brought my 4820TG. They had 10 total in the stock room, but only 7 were checked into the system.
-
im curious as to why you didnt buy an older laptop to make room for the new ones (timelinex) to come out???
-
I don't understand. Why would I buy an older laptop? I don't work at the store. The employee showed me how many 4820TGs they had in the stock room. You can even ask an employee how many of the 4820TGs they have at the store too.
-
Well werent saying not to tell anyone where these 4820tg were at until they cleared their shelves of old laptops. you should have helped them clear there shelves!
-
okay... are you trying to be sarcastic? It's not working for me. haha. I was trying to help out a friend who works at the store. Like you said before, working on commission sucks.
-
sarcastic? whats that?
-
Local MC had two 4820TG's in stock and now one is gone! Decisions decisions.....
-
see id be worried/tempted. the store by me has 10 so im not worried yet
-
You can tell MC to hold the 4820TG for a couple of days under your name/MC account. Tell them you are gathering money to purchase it. If the employee says he can't do that. Talk to another employee. MC held my 4820TG for 6 days.
-
I think I'm gonna wait for the i5 4820TG. Went by my local MC and they also did not have it on display. They had 8 though. Hopefully it will come on Amazon soon!
-
which MC? mine had 8 too
I think i'm going to bite the bullet on the i3 4820TG.
the only games I plan on playing are Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, and the occasional FPS, and apparently the i3 + 5650 combo will be way more than enough... the gpu will bottleneck me before the processor does...no reason to get the i5.
if only i can score one from MC tax-free... otherwise i have to wait for this thing to pop up on tigerdirect... -
Did you see that the I5-450 can be OC'd? I wonder if it will work for the I3-350M as well? The clockgen should be the same - no?
Bronsky -
yes i did... you may be onto something.
but i really have no desire to OC either the cpu or gpu
im 99.9% sure stock clocks will suffice.
its nice to know i can OC safely though
-
Can someone who bought a 4820TG i3 please do a battery test. Can you run a movie from a video file and see what the time estimate is on the battery. Please have wifi and everything else off thats not needed. Also make sure its using integrated graphics not the 5650. Brightness can be as low as possible while maintaining a 'good' viewing experience. Audio via headphones if that even makes a difference.
-
Just got my 4820TG and it's sooooo nice. So damn thin compared to my XPS M1330. Bit heavier though but don't think it's by much. Anyone know where I can get the restore CD for this laptop? Didn't come with any
-
Acer website. I think its $20.
-
Temped to snatch one from MC today... The price is pretty good for such a nice machine. Hopefully they have them on display, I'll see.
-
Tell them to bring one from the back room so you can see it
.
-
You make them with Acer's restore disc program. You'll need 3-4 blank DVDs and it'll take you about 3-4 hours. It takes a long time because it verifies every single process. You should be able to find it in the start menu.
-
If it's in the stock room. Most likely, they won't open the box and put the 4820TG on display or let you see the laptop firsthand.
-
anyone notice that at the store M website(can we mention it yet?) they put out a new 4820tg? it seems like its the i5 version but theres no picture or specs
hopefully that means the i5 is coming real soon?? -
Yes ... I guess we can say microcenter
Bronsky
-
link? i just see the i3 version
-
Micro Center - Acer Aspire Timeline AS4820TG-3195 Notebook LX.PSE02.228
it doesnt show a thing but i'm pretty sure its the model with the i5. It's even priced accordingly. -
Yep. That is the I5-450M model number.
Configurations are listed at the bottom of the page.

Nice find.

-
Yes, you can tell people to buy the 4820TG at Microcenter. haha. The store already posted the 4820TG on their advertising papers.
-
Ordered one! Thanks for the heads up!
-
the i3 or i5?
-
i wish microcenter had some kind of coupons/discounts... paying tax blows
-
still holding out for amazon. not sure how much longer I can last...
-
haha me too. I hope amazon gets it soon. I am too tempted to just buy it right now from microcenter
-
Just bought a 4820TG from MC today. So far i'm pretty impressed. This was bought as my "get me through till my Envy 14 arrives" machine, but I may end up keeping it if it can game nicely. Anyone know if there are updated Catalyst drivers for this model? The 10.6 drivers say they will not work with the switchable graphics
.
-
Why didn't you get the 4820TG?
-
So here is my quesiton -
i3 350M = $799 (2.26)
i5 450M = $899 (2.40 , TB to 2.66 BOTH cores)
Is the difference worth it for $100?... I don't really need the processing power as I have a i5 750 desktop as well but I'm not sure about this. -
Newegg has a warehouse in New Jersey, I have to pay tax to them too.
@hp.rooms Don't feel bad. I paid for mine 11 days ago and I have no idea where in the world it is.

Yea that... lol. Fat fingered the model #.
-
ppl who bought the 4820tg, can you comment on the build quality? keyboard flex, screen flex, etc. has anyone reviewed it yet?
-
if you decide to return it when the envy 14 arrives, how do you plan on getting around the restocking fee?
-
I am actually pleasantly surprised, after everything I had read about some of the build quality issues in the timeline line I had expected it to be worse. There are certainly some issues, but nothing that makes me regret the purchase so far. My keyboard does have a bit of flex, but it's hardly noticeable to me while typing. The dvd tray does flex a large amount - much more than any other I've ever used... if I thought I was going to be using it a ton I might be worried. The screen is the only thing that gives me real pause, holding on to the top corners of the lid you're able to flex it several mm easily. Get the sense you'll need to be more careful with it than most.
Overall the rest of the system looks and feels very nice, no other build quality issues that I see. The main chasis feels very solid, all the ports are very strongly anchored, and visually everything looks very good to me. One thing worth mentioning is that the 14" screen looks brighter/better than the average glossy screen in laptops today. It stood out when it was on display.
Which is another thing worth mentioning - when I went to buy it, my local microcenter (VA) had it on display.
Notebookcheck did a review of the 4820tg in may and has links to another half dozen english reviews. I'm quite happy with the purchase so far. -
Unfortunately i didn't realize the restocking fee till after I purchased it. So most likely it will end up being sold here or on Craigslist rather then being returned.
-
i've asked this question several times to many people on this forum and basically for $100, the upgrade is NOT worth it.
the performance gains are so marginal, if the i3 isn't enough for your needs, this particular i5 won't be either.
with that said, if i can grab the i5 version for just +$50 more, i will. but anything more i'm saving my money for a DIY upgrade in the future. most likely i'll be putting in the i5 580m (as long as Acer's bios supports it)
save your $100 and invest that into an SSD
Ahhh gotcha. -
Actually, for $100 more, you get the Core i5 and a larger harddrive at 500GB. So, it's a pretty decent upgrade.
-
+10-15% increased clock speed and +180gb HDD space is rarely worth $100. I'd rather put that towards an SSD or future CPU upgrade.
