Hi y'all,
I got a problem with my 4820TG's Intel graphics chip: Roughly every second time I try it, switching to the energy-saving chip from Intel won't work. The only thing I get then is a black screen. Sometimes I see the Windows environment in a small bar at the top, sometimes it's only some stripes of colors in the black background. This happens either when I manually switch to the chip or when a reactivate the laptop after energy-saving mode.
But I never experienced problems with the ATI chip or when the Intel chip was already running.
I installed my own Windows 7 64bit and am using the drivers from the Acer page. The device manager says version 8.692.1.0 for both, the Intel as well as the ATI chip. In both cases the driver provider is ATI Technologies Inc.. This irritates me a little bit since I installed the driver named Intel-VGA driver (though the installation process always says "Turbo memory").
Has anybody got an idea what I could try before I restore the original Windows to check if it might be an hardware issue? (Although it doesn't look like a hardware thing to me since problems never occur when a chip is already running...)
Thanks a lot in advance!

Only install the driver that is named AMD (ATI + Intel bundle) and not ATI or Intel seperate drivers. You can then update ATI drivers with newer versions; however, you should not be able to update Intel drivers.

First of all: Thank you for your reply.
Here is what I have done now:
Uninstalled the drivers for the Raedon and the Intel Chip out of the device manager
Uninstalled everything that comes with the Catalyst Control Center
Uninstalled the Intel Turbo Memory Driver
Used driver sweeper to delete everything that came from ATI
Used CCleaner for a general cleanup
Rebooted.
The strange thing was: Windows automatically installed the same drivers again without any ATI/AMD stuff installed (8.692.1.0).
Then I installed the AMD-VGA package for Windows 7 Pro 64bit which is available on the acer page. It says 8.713.3.3000.
I rebooted but after rebooting it was again 8.692.1.0 in the device manager. The error is still there.
Have I done this correct and is it normal that I still got the old driver? Any further suggestions?
You also said something about updating the driver. Where can I find them and how would I do this? -
You can update the ATI mobility drivers (you can get from ATI's website) once you have the AMD driver installed from Acer's website. The update steps are on the first page of the 4820TG Owners Lounge.
I believe that you can delete the driver permamently in "Device Manager" or update the driver manually. Maybe, that will allow you to install the AMD driver. -
Hi,
I just realized that the installation obviously didn't work correct the last time so I reinstalled the AMD 8.713.3.3000 now and it seems to work properly. I hope it stays like this!!!
Thank you!
