    Hi all.
I'd really like some opinions please.
I want to upgrade my laptop and I'm having difficulty with my choice.
The one option is 5820TG with i5 and 640 Gb HDD, the other is 4820TG with i3 and 500 Gb HDD.
Either of them would be a substantial improvement on my current model - its about 7 years old. But that's actually part of my problem - I want another one that will last me some time and for that reason I am hesitant about the i3.
Pros and cons - (in my eyes anyway) are
    5820TG
    + i5
    + bigger HDD
    + numerical keypad
    - bit heavier and bigger
    - far fewer people seem to be getting them - why?

    4820TG
    + 29% cheaper!
    - i3

Most of the time when I'm home I use an external keyboard and LCD screen, so I CAN get by without the number pad but it would be nice for those times when I need to do spreadsheets on the road etc.
Extra 140 Gb is a good thing but there's always external drives..

I'm thinking of maybe saving the money and getting the 4820 and maybe later (in a year when the warranty is over?) upgrading the chip? Can this be done on these models?

Anyway - I throw it open for discussion please - particularly since way less is written on the 5820 for some reason.
    Thanks in advance!

We would be able to give you a better answer if you told us the exact i3 and i5 chips available to you and what kind of work you do with your laptop.

But my instincts tell me the i3 would be enough for you if your 7 year old laptop has gotten you this far.

Is the i5 4820TG not available near you?

Purchase your laptop with a credit card that offers a free year extension on the warranty (AMEX or Visa Signature, etc).

The CPUs are upgradeable, provided Acer releases a BIOS that's compatible with them. Right now I think the i7-620M is the most powerful chip that's compatible.

Sorry for not being more specific.
    i3 - 350.
    i5 - 450.
I'm in South Africa, and these are the ONLY two options available here; no 4820 with i5.
I could buy online I guess but then if something does go wrong it will cost a fortune to ship back overseas... Plus many companies including Amazon will not ship computers to here :-(

Currently - studies, surfing, some retouching of digital photos.
Would LIKE to be able to use for editing and possibly run some games.

In any case, you won't be disappointed with 4820TG. I was able to pull off 9,000 3DMark06 with "measly" i3 350M. IMHO 15" screen would be too big for 1366x768 and you will lose good bit of portability. One good thing with 5820TG however is that it comes with 9 cell battery so it should last even longer.

Just stop thinking, log off and go buy! :p

    Thanks for the input guys.
    Maverickar15 - unfortunately this 5820 DOESN'T come with 9 cell. And its night here - I can't "go buy" right now :)
I'm thinking that the cost saving may be the decider, especially if I can upgrade the chip later if need be.
At worst, it means that with the money saved, I can buy the next one 29% sooner!
