Since I updated my 5050 to Vista Home Premium (via the Acer upgrade programme), the sound volume has become extremely low. I think the Realtek drivers are up to date (they're the ones supplied by Acer on the upgrade disk). I've also tried changing the performance from "Balanced" to "High" after reading another post on this forum, but that doesn't make any difference.

Has anyone also had this problem and found a solution?

Hey, believe me, I agree it's serious.

Anyway, an update ... I found that the sound volume through the headphone socket is just fine. But through the speakers, it's like something reduced the volume by half for some reason. I wonder if it's the Vista BIOS update?

I've mailed Acer support for assistance.

Make sure you are using updated vista drivers for your laptop. Sound drivers have been notorious for not working in Vista (especially the realtek drivers). Try adjusting the .wave output from your speakers under the control panel. I know that Vista gave me so many headaches after going from XP that I ended up just junking it all together and going back to xp (the crappy user interface, the lack of the run command from the start menu, the lack of xp interface in vista but yet keeping the win 2k, etc. etc. etc.)

Check for the .wave output and also check for updated drivers, these have been the 2 best solutions I have found to date for vista sound issues.

well...I think I have solved my own problem. The presets on the device were....odd :confused2:
I fiddled with the speaker volume by right clicking the speaker (easiest way to get there) and clicking playback devices. I selected speakers and then propoerties. Under enhancements was where I had to test things.
I started by unchecking the disable all sounds and the immediate mode boxes. That allowed me into the envorinment settings underneath. Now, that worked for my sound volume was:
check onlt the pitch select, equalizer, virtual surround and loudness equalization. Then apply.
This didn't improve the actual sound quality of my speakers, which is understandable as this is a laptop. But it did give me volume. Significantly higher volume.
    Which, is better than nothing.

Thanks very much for your help.

p.s. External speaker sound is amazing. It vastly improves the quality. However, who wants to lug around those? Use what works for your situation.
