    Hi all.

My Aspire 5051 has a fault and I need some info.

I noticed earlier that it wasn't charging the battery and kept flickering between battery or DC mode. Thinking it may have been the DC jack, I stripped the board out of the case and had a look. There doesnt appear to be any signs of broken solder joints.

While the board was out I decided to power it up. I noticed that the power board was getting really hot, easily over 80degrees Celcius, enough to burn my finger. It does this whether the battery is connected or not.

Now, is it normal for this board to get so hot ? I initially thought it might have been due to electrical arcing, but the temp seems extreme. Its getting so hot that the DC power plug is getting very warm. Seems this issue is connected to the charging issue, although using NHC it says i'm charging at 700W even when the read charge light is off.

Will replacing this board fix the issue or is it a more serious one ? Laptop is about 14months old.

So any advice on the issue and any remedies greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Kev

    Update.

I did a resolder on the DC jack connections and it all seems good again. The middle pin wasn't even loose but I thought I'd give it ago before spend £47 on a new part.

All I can think of is the power board under the jack has flexed as it seems a bit flimsy and broken a joint from the positive pin, possible on one of the internal pcb layers.

Had to use a 100W iron to do it as the board was dissipating the heat quicker than my 15W would heat up.

I have it now sitting charging and I'm not getting the flickering I was getting.

So my advice ?? Even if it looks ok solder it anyhoo !!

    Regards

    Kev

good fix and great advice,, dead solder joints are alot more common than you would think....

did that middle solder joint look DULL GREY by chance,, that's an indicator of a sub-par solder joint...

Yeah it looked like it had a grey tarnished finish. Anyhoo the fix didnt last for longer than 18hours so chances are the actual power board is knackered.

Looking on acer UK's spare parts site I noticed they have both the 5050 and 3680 powerboards, but no others. I assume the 5050 would be compatable, however thats also compatable with the 3680 series apparently.

Now the 3860 series powerboard is £15 cheaper from acer than the 5050 board is.

I'm having trouble finding the right info out as I cant get hold of the service manuals, so if anyone has any idea if they are the same part then please let me know.

    My part: DA0ZR1PB6D1 Rev : D 32ZR1PB0032 mainboard is a ZR3.

    Regards.

hi, i'm having a similar problem with the same laptop. recently charging the laptop has been a pain having to push the connector into the socket and fiddling with it to get a good connection. i think the months of pushing the jack in and out has weakened the dc board or loosened the pin . would you be able to give me some info on how to get the new part and how you did the repair etc... so i can try the same thinng? would not be much fun having to buy a new laptop after 18 months just because of a minor fault like this. thanks in advance for any help.
