    Hi all,

I bought a 5051AWXMi in the UK just before Christmas. All is OK for a while and then we started getting occasional BSOD crashes. The error code is 7e or 7f, which suggests hardware/RAM faults.

I've tried Memtest-86 and Microsoft's RAM diagnostics. Both show *frequent* faults at memory location 00000000. I assume this is the reason for the occasional blue screens.

I've seen somewhere, but can't find it now, a mention of Acer notebooks randomly loading RAM location zero with zeroes. Is this a known problem? Any updates I should consider applying?

I am in "negotiation" with the supplier about it, but I'd like to know what others think, meantime.

    Martin

If Memtest and the Microsoft RAM diagnostics tools both come up with errors, then yes, it probably is something to do with RAM. It is normally RAM that causes BSOD. Acer should be able to replace the RAM, provided your notebook is under warranty, for free. Although, they may take some time in doing so.

I would buy some RAM and test first - updates drivers to make sure a driver aren't causing BSOD - like the above states sending it to acer could take a while and most likely they will wipe out your HD - Also check for apps that have memory leaks, most likely it is the RAM because MEMtest is a great program, but i have seen it pop out errors and the PSU end up not providing enough power to the M/B and RAM and once that was replaced Memtest spit out no errors - so it is not FOOL proof - Ontop of that RAM is fairly cheap, you can get better / faster ram, and easy to upgrade / install - otherwise you want to pay nothing and not worry about / your data send it back to acer if you have warrenty -

Thanks for the feedback ... I'm now in discussion with the supplier and with Acer about getting this fixed. It's only a month old so well within warranty.

Hmm. Ebuyer have sent me a replacement machine, but it still fails the RAM tests. Must be something basic wrong with the mobo on these machines. I think I may just live with it as it doesn't crash XP often enough to be a concern.

Here is my experience,I also had problems with BSOD crashes when I bought my Aspire 5112 WLMi and with souncard and modem, they would just stop working and reinstalling drivers was not helping.
Memtest was also showing faults at memory location 00000000 so I sent my lappy back to ACER service.

They said they just flashed BIOS and now everything is working Ok,no more BSOD crashes. When I test the RAM with Memtest it is still showing faults at memory location 00000000,I called ACER back and they told me that these test's are not compatible with their notebook's,that they have their own test which showes that my RAM is OK.

In the beginning I thought they are lieing but I spoke with several PC servicemen's and they told me that this can easily be truth.
I hope that it is truth :D and my lappy working OK,that is the most important thing.

    Hi,

That's good info, thanks. IIRC, my replacement 5051 is at Bios 3112, although Acer's support site offers 3109 at present. I think I'll live with the machine for a while and see if I get any BSODs.

I had a similar problem with a 5562WXMi purchased in the UK. It was a RAM fault and I managed to isolate the faulty stick and send it to them for a replacment (Acer Germany). I didn't need to send in the machine.

For compatibility, check the latest version of memtest (1.75). Maybe that has a fix for newer hardware incase it is a software fault.

I also had issue with ram on my 5670 failing test i sent it back to them twice for it they finaly end up replace mainboard ram heatsink and it work fine now pass the test if you ram fail memtest i wound make them fix it they will

send them your laptop with out hard disk they will acept them that way if your worry about them wipeing it out

also you can try gold memory too but as other say make sure you useing the lastest version of memtester to check it

when i sent my laptop in for issue with ram i left memory testing cd in and they check it sent it back to make sure it passed
