On the chasis on the right side is a small hole with a symbol that looks like the mic in symbol on the front of the notebook. I checked the device manager and all hardware appears to be accounted for. I checked the settings in sound and it doesn't list an internal mic as an option. Only a logitech one from webcam software that was installed.

Does the 5100 have an internal mic?

yes it does. If you look closely at the left of the hole, you will see a little mic icon. the quality however, isn't that good. voices sound distant and tiny. However, it gets the job done.

You go into control panel, and sounds, and you should see that the default option for "sound input" is that microphone.
