I just updated to Vista using a clean install, and I have noticed a very much needed performance upgrade. Everything runs so much faster, and my boot up time has decreased from near a minute to a mere 20 seconds. I can tell you that Vista is fast using the 5102. When you do a clean install, you have the option of having XP saved as Windows.old. After a successful installation of Vista, you can just drag the files, NOT PROGRAMS, over to Vista, so you don't necessarily have to do a complete backup. Vista mounts as an image, instead of file by file as in XP, so installation in faster, smoother, and almost always flawless. The GUI is just beautiful. Almost Maclike. However, I have ran into a few noticeable problems that just get on my nerves after working flawlessly in XP.

First, Launch Manager. Does anyone know how to stop User Account Control (UAC) from asking me to allow the program to run everytime I start my computer?

Second, Vista refuses to recognize my ATI xPress1100 and instead reads it as a xPress200M. HOWEVER, the cards performance has increased i'd say about 50% in Vista. The colors are richer, the graphics smoother that they were in XP.

Third, the 4-way scroll pad behind my touchpad does not work, even though synaptics vista drivers are installed. Does anyone know how to make that work?

Fourth, OrbiCam does not work (the bison on, not logitech). Vista upgraded drivers to BisonCam NP Pro, but it will not start up. Also, I do not have direct access to it like before.

Fifth, there is a PCI Flash memory error. I do not know what this is. Does anyone know?

These are the only errors/problems that I have encountered after moving everything over from XP. Vista is very enjoyable, and as I am a college student who has a MSDN Academic Account, Vista Business was FREE!

GUI performance. I haven't installed any games, but except for Chess Titan, included with Vista. I'm still trying to calibrate the computer to perform exactly like I want it to.

the UAC is under users in control pannel and you can turn it off that's the only way it works.

the other thing with the synaptecs fourway i just installed the drivers from the acer site.

The other two I have no clue on as of yet.

What score does your video card get? I have a 5050 with the 1100 and it gets a crap score of 2.9. Also, have you tried installing the new drivers from the ATI page that they released the other day?

Every time I try installing them it tells me there's nothing to install. I have the same score as well. Its to be expected with a new ver. of Windows that drivers and stuff are going to be crappy its to much to hope people would be prepared before hand.

Since the drivers come from ATI and it says it supports the 1100 theres really no reason for them to not work. I could understand if we were hacking them or if they were beta but they arent.

Even the crappy intergrated intel chipset gets a better score (not that the ATI chipset is that much better)!

Really ticks me off that the drivers dont install. Like you mentioned ATI really should have thier crap together by now.

I'm going to have to do some more testing however I think the MS Drivers are better at this point i'm possibly going to try doing another clean install. However my preliminary test with City of Heroes before with the Windows drivers was much more playable and not so much under the same setting after I did the drivers install.

To solve the synaptics touchpad problems (specifically, the 4 way scroll not working, go to synaptics settings, and there are choices to use for the scroll pad.

Still no word on Launch Manager and ATI Flash.

I tried the 64bit version of Vista.

I found a problem, SD adapter is recognized and have a driver installed.

But no matter what SD card I inserted in, nothing happened!

I even can't find the SD card in File Manager

    Anyone have the same problem???

I to have Vista running on my 5102(sig).

I used the Touchpad driver AFTER I installed all my browsers. FF2 & Opera.
Or you can reinstall so it can pick up the browsers.

I use Realtek Vista driver from Sony .... HERE IS LINK SWEET!!

I also use the Acer Gridvista, & launch Drivers.

BisonCam Driver installs from Vista Update or Acer Driver site ...but CAM DOES NOT WORK IN VISTA :( Any program that trys to use it will freeze up.

Card Reader works fine, I didn't have to load any drivers.

Vista runs very fast & smoothly.

EDIT: Thank JML for the ATI vista link. Works perfectly. ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/note...0/driver/vista
