    Hi,

My acer 5102 occasionally halts on bootup and displays the error "0251 - CMOS Checksum Bad. Default Configuration Loaded".
The only change I can see in the bios is the time and date reset to defaults. Once this is updated the laptop boots ok and work fine.

Has anyone else come across this problem or any idea what might be causing it?

    Thanks

A-ha! Yes, I've had this too!

The problem only occurs for me if I touch any key other than the power button when the laptop is in standby mode. Doing this causes the laptop to restart and the BIOS error occurs.

This is the only time it happens, so I haven't investigated any further now that I know how to avoid it.

When does it happen on your 5102?

the problem is intermittant. Sometimes happens when comming out of sleep mode ( either with the power button or any other key ) but not always.
Sometimes happens when the laptop has been turned off for a while.
Doesnt seem to matter if the power supply is plugged in or not or if the battery is removed.

If I shut it down and restart straight away the laptop boots ok.

Dont know if its a cmos battery, systemboard, power supply or battery problem.

Do you have any problems with your laptop booting from cold?

No problems booting from cold or any of the other problems you describe.

Having checked the Service Guide it suggests the root of the problem will be the RTC (Real Time Clock) Battery. The RTC will be part of the CMOS and its battery will be the CMOS battery, so I think your first hunch was probably right.

Did you solve this 5102 bios re-setting problem? Have got the same problem, intermittent re-setting with loss of password settings and time etc.

Acer repairer has replaced mobo but still happening.

I've seen this a lot on any of the 5100 series; it usually results in a new mainboard.
