I noticed in my event viewer that there are 2 service errors each time I start up my Aspire 5102WLMi laptop. I just performed the eRecovery and I still am seeing the same errors.

Here are the names of the services that are erroring:

    eLock2FSCTLDriver
    eLock2BurnerLockDriver

I'm going to try attaching pics of the event viewer full info on them.

I tried searching the 'net with Google, Yahoo, and MSN and none of them came back with anything on these services. I also tried searching on the Acer site but it's pretty lacking for info.

Can someone please check their event viewer and see if they're seeing the same 2 errors at startup? Also, if anyone knows what these are and how to resolve the errors I'd would certainly appreciate some advice.

    Thanks.

    ^^^

Can someone please check their Event Viewer>System to see if the same 2 errors are registering when you turn on your notebook?

When did you notice these errors? Did these errors appear when you uninstalled a particular program/application? If yes, then try to re-install then un-install that particular program.

The errors are present from the start. Even after performing eRecovery and setting notebook to factory default the errors are there.

Try and look in the registry after the 2 'drivers'. See if they are associated with some program or a particular place on your hdd (a particular folder) where they 'should' be. Also, see what proggies are in fact opened at startup.

I'm won't be near my Laptop until tonight but will look at my event viewer and see if and what I have for errors.

I've been there a couple of times in the past and don't recall seeing them off hand.

I'm really stating to think that (unfortunately), the best way to go with this notebook is to reformat and install a nice fresh OS.

I've had some issues with missing files as well.
I'm a relative "noob" with Notebooks, but I build my own Desktops.

As such, I'm used to having things configured the way I want, and not the way a factory feels they should be configured. (Bloat, custom Programs, Fat32 file system etc).

I think it's a shame manufacturers don't give you an actual Operating System CD, but rather a recovery partition.

If you've had problems with the original factory configuration, you end up in the same boat if you go back to factory again.

For now, I'm leaving mine as is, but I see a reformat in the near future. (Which in itself is somewhat of a pain...getting drivers, keeping some essential Acer Programs while eliminating others etc.)

For mine, I think one large partition formatted as NTFS instead of Fat32 would be nice....and I'll use my own recovery software after that....like Acronis true Image.

For some illogical reason I'm hesitant to perform a fresh install. I burned the DVD recovery discs, but there's a comfort in knowing that if I screw things up I'll be able to easily get the notebook back from the notebook itself. I also don't have the media to install MCE, only XP Pro. I haven't yet decided how important that is to me. I don't know much about MCE, but I know I don't plan on using the notebook to record TV or as a "media center" in my entertainment system, so I don't think it really matters.

I did download and burn all the Acer drivers in preparation for a fresh install of XP Pro. I do see that happening in the future, just not sure when.

I'm also having an issue where my notebook freezes up on me. It's possible it's hardware related (incompatible RAM). I want to get that straightened out before getting rid of the recovery partition.

I look forward to hearing if you are seeing the same errors in your Event Viewer.

    Hello again gtoddh
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.
Anyway, I checked my Laptop and I don't see those errors.

In looking at you screenshots again, the "eLock" reference suggest to me it has something to do with the eLock management utility that comes included as part of the "empowering technology" program.

I don't have eLock included with mine for some reason....not sure if it's only included with some models or if I should have it and don't.

For more information you might look in the Acer System User guide .pdf in your programs menu.

If everything is working fine, I'm not so sure I'd worry too much about it.

It supposedly allows you to lock removable data devices, Optical Drives, USB drives etc.

There would be a picture of a lock in your "floating" empowering technology toolbar.

Now you've got me wondering if you have that option, and if so, why I don't.

Graphic driver shows X200 instead of X1100 chip

    Problem:

The graphic driver of the Aspire 3100 / 5100 shows under information that it has an ATI X200M graphic chip but this notebook should have an ATI X1100 graphic chip. How can this be solved?

    Solution:

We have released a new driver to solve this problem. This driver supports the ATI X1100 graphic chip and can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_3100_5100_5110/driver/chipset_ati_v8.251.zip. The file has a size of 78,5MB.

I've got a 5103WLMi, just over a month old, and the same errors are appearing in the system event log on logon, and have been since I bought it.

Everything else seems to be working fine, and in my box was an ammendment leaflet saying that the eLock facility isn't available with my laptop - so maybe they found some problem with it and didn't know how to fix it? I'm not particularly fussed by this, but it does seem a bit 'untidy'.

    Hope this helps,
    cheers,
    Gary
