Keep in mind that I did a few upgrades when I had Vista Home Basic. I upgraded the CPU to a C2D T5450 and I upgraded the RAM to 2GB. Vista performed at least 30 percent better.

If you still have a Celeron and 1GB RAM i would tell you to consider upgrading to a Core 2 Duo CPU and 2GB of RAM. Upgrading to a C2D will allow your lappy to run cooler as well.

The T5450 can be had for 40-60 bucks. 1 GB of ram for about 30. You can go as high as 3 GB of RAM (although to make that work you have to have a 2GB and 1GB Chip in the correct slots) and as high as the T9300 if im not mistaken.

I have since upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate on my 5315 and it works perfectly. Aero and Flip3D are smooth, Bitlocker is flawless. Boot Time is under a minute. Gaming on this laptop is limited to older games because of the Intel X3100 (FS9 runs at about 30fps without clouds, CS:S runs at about 60fps but slows down with frags and smoke grenades; even the Sims 2 is playable) But business apps, web browsing, basic photo editing, simple graphic applications, hell even 720p videos run smooth.

    I hope that helps.

I installed W7 Ultimate on a friends 5315, installation went smoothly, as well as the drivers, probably one of the easiest installations on "older" laptops I've done lately. Go on and upgrade to W7, if you run into something, just come here and ask.

have you ever heard of anyone upgrading an acer extensa 4420, with a Athlon 64x2 cpu with only 256 kb Cache to something better.
