A recent change to the HD on my 5315 was a great opportunity to try installing Vista, drivers, useful Acer applications etc. starting with a blank disc. (yes, I know there are easier ways, :D )

I used an OEM Vista Ultimate 32 install disc and the key on the bottom of my laptop, which was activated by phone and correctly set the Vista version to Home Premium.

Most things worked ok, but crucially the network devices were not and I need to do a search on the old HD (via the USB port using a Sharkoon SATA to USB box) to find the right drivers for the Broadcom LAN port.

Having upgraded Vista to SP1, I went to Acer's European site and downloaded as many of the SP1 drivers as I thought I needed. Mainly the most recent Acer sound, camera and LAN drivers. Vista had already installed more recent Intel graphics drivers.

It is worth noting that I installed an Alps touchpad driver, which caused occasional pausing when moving the cursor round the screen, exactly as I'd observed but ignored on the factory Vista build. I removed the Alps driver and normal touchpad performance returned after a reboot.

On the application front I loaded Crystaleye and the Acer Arcade, which I actually like.

I also loaded the Acer Empowering manager, with enet, power, presentation and conferencing modules.

A final point of note: the 9500ES cpu which I am using had been relying on the IK8fan utility to control its temperature via fanspeed changes on the factory installed Vista Home Premium. Fan speed control is happening automatically under control of the OS now (ie there is no need for IK8fan), even though I have the same firmware error/service load failure messages I mentioned before. Maybe a clean install of the OS is needed to get the right OS modules enabled, just like in the good old days of W2000.
