In XP, you'll see a big difference going up to 1GB, and more modest improvement going to 2GB depending on how many apps you run at once. Notebooks' relatively slow hard drives make mean bigger slowdowns if your paging file is getting a lot of use (which it probably now is). If you're running XP, go to 2GB if you routinely multitask or play games that require lots or system memory. If you decide to go cheap, there's a lot of cheap 512k sticks on the used market (pulled out of laptops getting the same 2GB upgrade you're contemplating).

In Vista, you'll see an immense difference going to 2GB. Vista can use most of your first 1GB just to run itself it you turn on a lot of options.

As for a gain from using faster memory, unless you can change the memory clock speed in your computer's BIOS, it will run at the same speed as the original RAM the mainboards memory bus speed), even if it's capable of better performance. My Acer has no tweakability in this area; maybe yours does. [edit] However, you can safely use the faster RAM, and if your system is designed to support the fastr spped, it should do so automatically.

I believe the OP already has 1GB, and is asking about a speed upgrade/and or an upgrade to 2GB.

@howard: I think if you're using Vista, you should go for 2 one GB sticks of the cheapest RAM you can find (which I think is 667MHz right now). If you're on XP, a RAM upgrade probably wouldn't help too much, unless you routinely open a lot of large files simultaneously, or do Photoshop or something like that.

yes i do use photoshop and it runs rubbish om my old celeron 512 meg laptop
i also want to use my laptop while i downloading which seems to slow down my laptop so if a 2gig upgrade would help this i would be willing to do so

What are the other specs of your computer? It could be the processor or hard drive that slowing down the system while downloading.

And 2 sticks is the most cost effective way to get 2GB of RAM, so I'd do that if you plan to upgrade to 2GB.
