I have two Aspire 5520 notebooks running Vista Home Premium. Both have this problem. When typing, random things happen. The cursor might jump back several characters. It might select the previous word instead of showing the letter just typed. Sometimes another window is made active. Best case all that happens is that keystrokes get dropped. The 5520 is unusable because of this.

To reproduce: Open notepad and start typing.

This also happens in safe mode, which means it is not a driver problem, unless of course the keyboard driver itself is an issue (still loaded in safe mode). It is not a memory problem. It happens with 1Gb, 2Gb or 3 Gb of memory installed.

It does *NOT* happen with an external USB keyboard.

This strongly smells like a low-level hardware issue or keyboard driver issue. Yes, my system is up-to-date with keyboard drivers.

Since it happens on two 5520s the chance of this being a unique defect is extremely small. Has anyone else experienced this?

Try looking for an updated BIOS on the Acer Euro site that resolves these issues your having.

Also you might also be accidentally hitting the touchpad when you type and that can probably move the cursor around.

There are 2 BIOS updates v1.07 and v1.11, v.1.07 mentions nothing about the keyboard problem and v1.11 does not list any fixes. Try updating the BIOS to v1.11 unless you are already running v1.11. http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5520.html

If all else fails, call Acer and tell them your problem

I also have the same notebook Acer Aspire 5520, and have the same issue. The problem relating to windows poping etc,. I think is primarly related to the touch pad, turn it off and check if it still happens.
As for the keyboard laggin, yes, it also happens to my notebook.

I fixed my cursor jumping problem by doing what SKF posted on Nov 07 and now my laptop works perfectly thanks to her advice:

Per SKF : "I opened my mouse options, and there were quite a few tabs, I opened all of them and whenever I saw a speed slide, I changed it to read about 1/3 instead of 1/2 (in the middle) of the speed. I can't tell any difference. But, I think the speed can affect things, like if you are on a bicycle and miscalculate a turn by an inch, no problem, but if you are piloting a plane and miscalculate a turn by an inch, while going 500 mi an hour, you'll end up in another country! Anyway, I also clicked the box DISABLE TAPPING WHILE TYPING. My laptop is now behaving perfectly and I hope this helps someone!"

Hopefully it will help you out, my cursor that was jumping every 3 seconds is fine now.

My acer 5520 laptop has same cursor jumping problem. It picks up things and drops them without warning, also opens and closes toolbars and windows randomly.

Have not tried an external keyboard but it is same with an external mouse. It seems to get worse the longer the computer is on. I'm ready to pitch the thing out the window.

I called acer and they walked me through a deinstall/reinstall of the mouse and touchpad. That did not work. I called them again and they walked me through a system restore. That did not work. A friend showed me some driver updates that I could install for the mouse. That did not work. I called acer again and they recommended to send the computer back to them by mail. I'm looking for other solutions first.

Cannot find the same options on m computer as other users recommended. I can't find the place to disable the touch pad and the options on my control panel seem to be different from what other users recommended.

    What to do?

 Yes, I experience this all the time, it is very frustrating and I'm going to return this PC to circuit city in part due to this problem.

forgot to mention, I have set the touchpad to 'tap off when typing' but still experience the problem. Also, I can't find the setting for 'palm check' as mentioned by hoggie
