IDE to AHCI
Here is what I have as IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller
Intel ICH8M 3 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 2828
Intel ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers 2850
Primary IDE Channel
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
My laptop is a 5620z or 5620-4025 with a Hitachi HTS542512K9SA00 ATA Device. When I looked up this HD, it appears to be the standard SATA HD, or is it?
The original setup under VISTA, had ATA Channel 0 (twice) and ATA Channel 1 (twice) instead of the above Primary and Secondary IDE Channels.
The files to be used are in the requested C:\Drive, yet I am reluctant to pull the trigger because I am not sure that I should nor am I sure which one of the above is the driver that is to be changed if when I make the change.
Your counsel would be appreciated to advise what to do at this point.,
NO SOUND
One other thing has be going in circles regarding sound with the Realtek software. The Manager in the 3D Audio Demo works fine .but ..the MultiMedia, which is most important, indicates that there is NO Audio Device.
Any thoughts as to how I can resolve this also?

you should install realtek software from acer's site not from realtek.
I am about to downgrade too,i hope i wont have any problems.I am making backups now.did you make recovery disks? -
Yes, I did install the Realtek software from the Acer disk.
Made the disks, the Recovery and the Application/Driver disk. Bye Bye Vista.
The drivers on Application/Driver disk were newer than those on the Acer website.
Everything is working under the IDE but the SOUND. Wireles mode is fine with either the Acer provided Atheros, which I disabled, or the Linksys WUSB600N adapter.
Good luck on the downgrade..........I used WinXP Pro and had a few issues until updating to SP2. -
Actually that's incorrect.
While some Vista drivers will work on XP, many do not.
Therefore it is recommended you go to Realtek webpage and download XP drivers for your sound card from there.
It is highly recommended that XP drivers are downloaded from the manufacturers websites as they will be usually the latest and best option you have in proper installation of the hardware.
XP displays things in device manager a tad differently compared to Vista, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Just make sure you installed all SATA drivers before you go to bios and re-enable AHCI (if you installed XP by disabling AHCI in the first place). -
The disk has both Vista and XP drivers.
My real concern is first to get back the Sound Device.
I did originally install Realtek ver. 5.10.0.5423 and then went to down load WMD_405 from Realtek website and it was the same as I had. Or after the install, it did not indicate that the install failed.
What I also do not understand is why does the Demo play and I hear the sound yet I still do not have an Audio Device.
Why doesn't the Realtek install fix this or what do I have to do to fix it?? -
Many new HD soundcards built into laptops recently are not XP compliant for drivers.
If you can hear sound at times but not always it sounds more like a configuration setting than anything else.
Does device manager show up properly with no warnings or flags? -
I found the answer that works for me.
The solution was on Computerboom.com which gave a response to an error code which was:
"ANSWER: I searched Google using the error code you provided and found this problem to be very common. The most common solution was this:
