Bought my mum a 5633wlmi with the built in webcam. The framerate is very poor, we get really blurry images over skype, is this normal? My Vaio SZ is much much sharper.

By default the orbicam has low light boost on. When you are in a room with lots of sunlight, enough to see the red dot in the webcam, the framerate will be pretty high and the quality will look real good. Otherwise go into the options turn off low light boost and play with the exposure and other settings and you'll get better framerates but lesser quality. So it's best to use the orbicam in a room with lots of light and youll get real nice video quality and good frame rates.

So if it has enough light, a red light comes on?

No, it's just that if you are in a room where theres plenty of light, you yourself will be able to see the center of the webcam, which looks reddish. And when the webcam gets lots of light, the framerate of the orbicam is pretty decent for video. But if u don't have enough light u gotta fiddle with the settings to get good framerates, but most likely youll have to turn off low light boost and it makes it look less sharp. Still good though.

Thanks a lot for that, I'll try it out.

I also find using Skype the built in mic/speakers can cause problems with feedback, I guess there's no way round that.

    edit:

tried your tip but still getting quite juddery action at 640x480; when I drop it to 320x240 it is better, but not great. This is on the laptop, not over the network, once it's been over hte net it's even worse.

And now the user has installed MSN Live messenger and Skype can't even find the webcam anymore, even if MSN is not running. Hohum. Hopefully the Vista upgrade will arrive soon and sort it all out.

Maybe installing some "logitech" drivers instead may help??? .. read somewhere that the logitech drivers solved some issues with this orbicam.

Mine is lousy too by the way though I have not got around to looking at the issue!! Only had the laptop a week and webcams are not important to me anyway!
