    Hi all:

So...I've been using my 5670 for awhile now. No problems. I finally decided to install Notebook Hardware Control so I could have a better idea about temperature. I was surprised to discover that my CPU speed fluctuates regularly and often between 1GHz and 1.67GHz. In other words, the core voltage stays constant but the multiplier changes between x6 and x10. I am well-aware of Intel's SpeedStep and I assume that's what's going on here.

The real issue is that my notebook is plugged into AC power while this is happening. I could possibly understand the clock speed change if I was running off the battery but NHC shows that the CPU drops to a constant 1GHz at that point. Even with NHC set to "maximum CPU speed" this fluctuating continues.

    1) Are these clock fluctuations within normal operating parameters for my 5670?

    2) Is it possible to stop the fluctuating and run at a constant 1.66GHz?

    Thanks.

Yes, Speedstep will continue to work even on A/C power. However it realy does not affect the computer performance as it should go to full speed whever needed.

To turn off Speedstep changing the Power settings to "Always On". This, usually will work unless you are using any other external program for power management. So turn off any other power management software before doing this otherwise it wont work.

Thanks for the reply Miner. I was just a little surprised by the clock behaviour and wanted some reassurance. This is my first notebook - these sorts of things just don't happen in the desktop world! :D
