    Hi all,

My HD recently started producing disk failures. Every time I do a CHKDSK /R, new bad sectors are added and the HD Tune tool shows 7% of damaged blocks.

I have a Warranty extension on the notebook, but Acer refuses to replace the disk because the CHKDSK still finishes. It only replaces the disk if the CHKDSK refuses to complete. IMHO this is pretty rediculous :(.

So I will have to buy a new one myself, does anyone know whether you can add a 160GB disk (have a Samsung 120GB currently)? The manual only lists until 120.

Does anyone know of any tools that are better than the CHKDSK to repair a damaged disk. I already did "low level wipe" using the Samsung HUTIL.
But I guess its pretty hopeless.

    Oh well, thanks all,
    Al.

    Thanks for the answer.

The following SATA Samsung drive was built in: http://www.samsung.com/au/products/harddiskdrive/harddiskdrive/hm120ji.asp

Well I told them and they (Acer Benelux) dont care. Their criteria is the standard Windows CHKDSK not completing for replacing a disk. They are arguing that if the CHKDSK completes, the disk is "repaired" (sort of).

The warranty extension only guarantees a working system, which it does ... somewhat. Even though the disk will probably completely fail somewhere in the near future.

Would there be perhaps a Samsung Warranty in effect, even though the drive was build in the notebook when I bought it, and I have no separate receipt for the drive?

    Get a copy of Spinrite.

    http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

It'll look for bad sectors and mark them as bad. It'll also try to read any bad sectors and move the data to a new location. You do not have to reinstall Windows or any programs. As far as I know there is no software that will do a low level format on current drives.

same issue, acer told me to suck it up more or less.

I had to reinstall Windows because the old was corrupt.
I used the Samsung HUTIL "low level format" and it worked OK.

I got a written confirmation from Acer that they only replace the disk if it doesnt work *at all*.

Tools like Spinrite and HDD regenerator may work (although the claim "It does not hide bad sectors, it really restores them!" is bogus), but price is a little steep. May as well buy a new HD.
