Well, you recieve a full licence of Windows XP Home with this laptop right?
Is there a way to reinstall a clean OEM or otherwise copy of Windows XP Home totally fresh and clean from all the crap Acer has, and use the licence recieved with this laptop.
I am looking at purchasing the laptop and I don't really like the idea of having to buy another XP licence. Any info on this at all?
(also while i am on the forums asking questions what is the thickness of this laptop at the front and back?)

yeah.
google "magical jelly bean software"
you can find the key you need very easily. write it down and save it.
you can borrow / burn someone else's xp home disc, and use your key -
is it the oem version i'd be looking for or the retail or .......
i actually *ahem* might have a "all in one" windows xp cd somewhere .. was wondering if there is the licence/key was some strage "Acer version ONLY" key or something -
Check out my review of the 5672wlmi, I have MANY pictures of the size, width, depth, etc. etc. etc. - http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16348055 The depth is roughtly the height of a quarter (very thin imho)
Also as far as the operating system install goes read below, you might have EXTRA copies of xp lyin around and not know it!
Just a heads up, this comes straight from someone who has been servicing pc's for quite some time, not to mention someone who owns and reinstalled XP on a 5672wlmi.
Before you format your PC be aware that you actually have 2 VALID and possibly even THREE OEM home keys on your laptop!
Most OEM computers come with 2 keys.
1) COA sticker on the case.
2) volume license code used for install (key the system actually uses)
3) And lastly the code used in the unattended file possibly located in an unattendedsetup.txt file which would be in your I386 directory.
------------------------------
First: Use magic Jellybean to grab the key on your PC (check to see if it differs from the one on the bottom of your PC, if so then SAVE it and use it on another pc down the road!)
Second: Find an OEM disk of XP Home, if you happen to have an AIO version or one that auto puts a key in for you then simply install XP Home OEM, and then use Magic Jelly Bean to change your key.
Third: Call up Microsoft and register your OS (you'll most likely have to call the 1-800 number and be forwarded to india)
You are all set!
I know that my Acer came with 2 valid working keys (some HP's come with 3!)

I installed with an XP SP1 OEM disk, trying it first installing on the D drive, once XP accepted the original XP serial number on the bottom of my 5672, i cancelled the xp installation od the D drive. I had downloaded previously the drivers from the Acer sites. Then I reformatted the drive, did a clean install of XP, and afterwards installed the drivers in the order given at this site, and after about an hour, was able to validate the serial with microsoft, and now have one single partition of 120gig and a faster machine without the acer bloatware.

enjoy! i'm glad my advice helped! ^_^

Does this mean if my Acer has XP Home, I can install oem XP Pro and use the key on the bottom of the labtop?
And how crucial is it to register, since I use my OEM XP Pro for my main computer, also. -
No, you need to keep apples with apples and oranges with oranges. If your KEY is for home use home. If youre key is for pro use pro.
The home key will not install pro, and the pro key will not install home.
They are 2 completely different licenses as well peices of software.
*theroretically* you could swap the OS from your desktop to your laptop and your laptop to your desktop. however according to microsofts licenscing on OEM software they demand that you keep your hardware configuration with your software license (so you don't go around using oem licenses on new hardware.... it allows them to make more money b/c of it).
Now will redmond know the differnce if you re-register your PC using the key from your desktop on your laptop? yes, probally. Will they do anything about it? I have yet to run into a computer rebuild for a client using the same OEM key on new hardware the 1st time around. Repeated hardware changes has led to hicups, but that is just me.
Proceede with caution as well as a bit of discression on this one if you want. My humble opinion is to keep things the way they are, you won't see any improvements from home to pro on your setup anyway. Pro is mainly used for adding pc's to domains and a few extra functions and tweaks the every day "home" user does not need.

Wow thanks for the reply. It really helps.
I'm formatting my Acer 5672 right now and I'm probably gonna install XP Pro.
Should I register it? Is there any benefit? I've never registered the oem Pro I have.
Why pro? Well its the only OEM disk I have. -
I hope you read what I stated above about the various keys found on the 5672.
Also, you will need ORIGIONAL oem media to reinstall XP on your lappy and desktop. "restore" disks will not cut it, so be forwarned before you go formatting anything! A dell restore disk will not work on an Acer, and vice versa! The reason you never "registered" your OEM Pro is b/c it came auto-registered on your desktop. if you register it on your lappy the registration will expire on the other pc.
Second you'll have to register any copy of XP after 30 days that is not on a restore image or come with an auto vlk copy of XP found in oem branded computers (dell, hp, compaq, acer, etc. etc.etc.)
You MUST register or it will lock you out. Please read up and do your homework before you do anything like this. I can't stress it enough, the last thing you want is to have 2 pc's with no operating system and no way of putting them back the way you want.
The only way you don't "register" is if you used a restore disk, and according to your reply it sounds like that is what you had previously.
Please read up on what is required and reconsider if you think it's a walk in the park. Because even if you do manage to install XP home on your desktop and Pro on your lappy that by no means allows you to "register" it. M$ could put a stop to you and you'll be up a creek after all that work. It is entirly their opinion and decision to allow you to have a licensed copy of that software on a different pc seeing how it is OEM and OEM stays with the hardware. If it noices a change they could just blacklist it and mandate that you either install it back on the origional hardware or not use it at all.

AHH sorry I think I started a confusion storm.
Sorry I just got back from 3 day of hell and I'm kind of out of it.
I have an actual XP Pro that I BOUGHT but never registered. I kinda got a lil messed up with the "oem disc." Sorry about that.
Thank you for posting on this topic, you're like a personal jesus.
PS: I made a restore disc.. JUST in case. -
Got a question... if I install and register a copy of Windows XP Pro, will I be able to install it and register it on another computer successfully, or will Microsoft reject the code?
-
MS will most probably reject the code.
-
So is there somewhere to legally obtain an OEM copy without a licence/key so people who want to go the route of reinstalling windows totally fresh can do so with their licence that comes with the laptop?
-
yes, as I've stated before. go to your local pc repair shop with your notebook, and ask them for an oem home disk. They will be able to provide you with one!
If that fails ask around, I'm sure someone has an .iso of one here somewhere*cough*

This is where the consumer loses.
You think you paid for windows, well, what you paid for was a license. Most companies/retailers (dell/acer/hp/etc) only give you an install of said license.
I do not know whether this is due to some agreement with MS, or whether this is just cheaper for the retailer, but it SUCKS for the consumer.
I understand that the average computer user is not going to need a copy of windows to do a fresh install and I'm sure the software companies view this as a way to deter software piracy. I too would agree with them ONLY if they did not install the numerous "helpful" software on the machine.
If a company gave me an install of only windows (on NTFS) without drivers I would not complain at all. They can provide an option on the recovery cd to do a "simple" or "advanced" install. The advanced one could allow you to choose what drivers, software, and/or patches you want to install. However, most companies only allow full restore their way, or nothing at all.
Just my 2 cents -
If they still tell you that you need to purchase a copy go tell them to go fly a kite and that they simply want to make money off of you.
Legally you can get a copy of the "Media" just fine. Media is just media, the real cost comes in from the actual COA or "key / license" you recieve.
I've tried to explain this to several people here that still seem to be against this understanding, but please go read up on your digital rights. For home / personal use it is perfectly legal to have a backup copy of your media. In many cases you never even recieve it (or get a restore disk at best). Go excercise your digital rights and go get an OEM copy of XP with SP2 intergrated into it.
Anyone that tells you elsewise is either misinformed or wishes to make money off you.
They reason they don't include it is 2 reasons.
#1. It is cheaper to give a restore disk by default (kinda like the blanket approach to cover their asses). Auto go and install the drivers and **** by default saves them time and saves the consumer who don't know jack sh!t about anything.
#2. It's easier for the noob consumer. If you still want the oem media dell will give it to you for like 4 bucks more in the total cost of your purchase.
Go get some origional media, or if you need help lemme know. We'll find a retailer that will sell you a copy for the cost of the media + shipping.

Hi, after having read all threads about ACER´s secrets and the XP disk I´m still wondering If I could use my XP Home disk I got with my Fujitsu. Unfortunately the laptop got stolen 3 weeks ago and I hope that at least the CD could come in handy now after I have bought myself a 5672.
-
More on this to come, but check back to the Acer forum in a week or so while I write the guide and knock out any bugs in the system install disk.
Look for it soon
--ssx-- -
Great. Looking forward to reading it. In the meantime I´ll try to be patient and don´t do anything stupid in order to get rid of all that ACER stuff, although I like the 5672 very much.

I have trouble downloading Magic Jelly Bean software,my NOD 32 detects it as a threat to my computer!!!
I tried to download it from two different web sites but I always get a warning from NOD32,is this normal??
-sorry for this off topic question- -
@ max 0401
For more information regarding magic jelly bean keyfinder showing up as a virus check here - http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17009651 . The reason it throws that is because it is accessing / editing your windows registry without confirmation from windows.
It's not a virus, if you read up on the rest of that topic you will see that KAV flagged it as being a possible threat but allowed it to run properly without problems.
If you have more questions about OEM SLP keys just ask here. I'll be starting on my OEM hardware activation guide in the near future, I'm just testing my methods out on several pieces of hardware. So far I've gotten it to pre-activate on pcs from a 733mhz PIII up to the latest dell to come out of the factory.
More to come soon, i'm just going to make some .7z addons to make it easier for you and everyone else.

few days ago.
Can I use it twice but first uninstall it from the old desktop PC? -
Hello,
If you have a XP Media Center Edition 2005 serial what do you need to install then for the OEM serial? Is it the XP Home or the XP professional edition? Or do you need a special MCE OEM disk?
Kind regards -
in keeping apples with apples each key is specific to the operating system and the disk.
So a MCE2k5 key will only work with a MCEdisk and a home key will only work with a home disk.
You will need to get a MCE2k5 oem disk if that is what your laptop came with.
--ssx-- -
Great stuff SSX, I've found all the keys via my restore CD's, now as soon as I get a XP Pro disk, I'm going with a CLEAN install!
BTW, I went to CompUSA and asked for a OEM for my laptop that I purchased there and they said, "We don't give those away, you can purchase one from us though". Oh well, just as I figured.
