Hi this problem just started happening again and now im out of warranty.
when computer comes out of sleep mode I get a solid white/grey screen.
the problem has only happened twice recently both times where the first time i used the laptop of the day. cold reboot fixed it the first time. multiple attempts at putting the computer back to sleep and waking it up in combination with closing and opening the lid fixed it the second time.
I know this problem is not uncommon and that it has been solved before, unfortunately i can find a solution.
I believe this to be a hardware problem and that the computer is having a problem initializing the screen under certain conditions.
here is a link to the same problem with a picture, on this forum with no solution posted.

Actually the problem has been resolved in that link you posted (at least it seems so). Since gray screen appeared only on internal LCD but not when connected to an external display and it started appearing after a loud crack had been heard we ended up diagnosing it as a broken ribbon.
In your case first thing to do is to upgrade all the relevant drivers- VGA included- it seems to be a software issue in your case. -
all of my drivers are up to date.
I haven't been around a secondary monitor with a proper cable yet, while the problem was happening.
I was really hoping that someone else had this problem already and could tell me the exact solution. If its a hardware problem doesn't always mean that its a ribbon cable.
In the meantime, if anyone has a link to a good teardown of this series laptop I would appreciate it. -
Service manuals contain those but these can't be shared on NBR due to copyright issues.
Look for an Aspire 5740 service guide- maybe you'll find something.
BTW it's not a known issue- 5740G don't remember it being mentioned once in 5740G owners lounge. -
here is yet another link from the same forum same problem.

this problem is getting pretty bad. finally i was able to plug in a hdmi cable while the problem was happening, and i was getting nothing on the alt display.
if i grab the screen from the right side. flexing it away from the keyboard will temporarily fixes the problem.
I havent been able to try flexing the screen with the hdmi attached.
any help on the problem is still greatly appreciated. -
I would bet that ur lcd cable is out.... happened to me and if I put my screen in one position it would work, but if I moved it at all the computer would short and cut out (scared me). But looking at the melted together wires and replacing my cable it has been working fine ever since.
