From what i hear, the 8600m gt in the acer 5920 is pretty weak when compared to the Asus G1S and Macbook Pro.
But how does it compare with a 8600m gs in the Asus F3's series. I know that its 32 stream processors (gt) vs 16 stream processors (gs). But does it matter if the 5920 is underclocked and the f3 is slightly overclocked?

The 5920's 8600m GT is the same with the Dell 1520 and 1720's, and the majority of the others except for the G1S and the MBP as you have mentioned.
I am not sure abou the f3's 8600m GS, but with my overclocked 5920 I am able to get 4100 on 3dmark06 on 1280x800 res, I'm not sure how the f3 performs. -

The GS is nowhere as powerful as the GT. I believe there is about 600-1000 points in difference for 3Dmark06.
5920 gets about 3128.
I think you can find out more information from the F3 review at this site.
Edit: Yep, F3 gets about 2344
I don't know anything about overclocking though -
I just don't want you to use the 3Dmark06 as an indication of the strength of the card. 3dMark 06 does not really give a good indication of real game performance.
The Asus F3sv 8600m gs uses DDR2 Vram just like the 5920G's 8600m gt. So in gaming I would expect better future performance from the 8600m gt. Currently both cards can handle any game and some of the newer DX10 demos, at most or all settings set to high, without a hitch, but usuallly on a max resolution of 1280X800, before performance begins to suffer.
I personally saw very little advantage in having an 8600m gt over gs, because I am an occasional gamer but not an enthusiast gamer, so I opted for F3sv configured with a better hard drive and a much better processor, plus two needed accesories (mouse and bag) and a 2 year limited warranty, over the 5920g which has an 8600m gt, but seems to have poor build quality and is extremely bulky, has a much worse processor and only comes with a one year Acer limited North American warranty, vs Asus' global warranty. Asus alos provides much better service as opposed to Acer.
So it really all depends on how you use the computer. -

I'm also not a frequent gamer myself so I won't groan about getting a GS instead of a GT. However gamers at the Asus forum are clearly groaning about GS. Just check out the F8 thread. -
Yeah I agree. The build quality is not as bad as people say it is. The design looks ok to me, nothing great or ugly. While it is true that 3dmark06 does not give precise info on how your GPU performs, but it does serve as a good guideline.
I guess the onlyway to know how much the cards differ is by getting both laptops to run games such as FEAR maxed out and compare the FPS. (Since auto detect will choose settings that will give you a constant 30 fps or something)
