So my old 5920G has, twice now, started to beep like crazy at which point the pointer on the mouse continues to work, but everything is basically frozen. I.e., can't click on windows to close them or open new files, etc.

Tried CTRL-ALT-DEL, but that doesn't work either. Basically have to hit and hold the power button to shut it down.

The first time it did this, I rebooted it, everything was fine. This time, it started to beep very shortly after turning it on.

The laptop is very warm as well (though that laptop, and every Acer laptop I have including my 3820T is warm), so I was curious if the beeping was some sort of over heating alarm?

    Any ideas?

It's unlikely to be an overheating problem but no point in guessing- use RealTemp or HWMonitor to check on the CPU temperature.

It may be a stuck key on the keyboard or a problem with keyboard ribbon connector that makes it look like a key is stuck but that's just a guess.

I think it's yet another Seagate Drive failing. This time my ST9500 7200.4 drive (have already sent my Momentus hybrid in to be repaired). When it started whistling/beeping, I removed the back cover and the sound seems to be coming straight from the drive (though somewhat hard to tell). I then get the blue screen of death and when I start back up, have a whole bunch of corrupted data files that are "repaired" via chkdsk.

Will have to run Seagate's drive utilities. But this will likely be the last Seagate drive I buy.

    Grrr.

Post a full SMART status here if you want a second opinion.

Will do, for now I've swapped back to the old hard drive (WD Blue 5400 rpm) that came with the computer. Thankfully it looks like I had put Win 7 on it and left it otherwise blank (though I wonder if I loaded Win 7 from my Acer 3820 on it given some of the drivers on it).

Has been working fine for the last hour running the same processes (I'm saving some old HDV tapes to the hard drive using HDVSplit).

Going to backup the 7200.4 contents to my backup drive that will take a few hours given how much is on it and the fact that I have to use a Thermaltake BlacX to an external drive (USB to USB).

I ran a quick SMART test and it passed fine, as well as another short test and they passed fine. Haven't run the long ones yet.

    Thanks.

Just an update, it would seem that the drive was certainly the culprit. Purchased a 120gb OCZ SSD drive on sale a few weeks ago and put that in the laptop. No more beeping after extended usage whatsoever.

As for temps, I tried to check them (interestingly used both RealTemp and HWMonitor which gave different measurements of up to 10 degrees variance), but they didn't seem out of whack.

Also tried several times to run a full Seagate Tools "long" check or whatever it's called on the drive, but it would always start beeping and freeze up in the midst of the test. All the short drive tests and SMART tests showed up fine.

May try to format the Seagate drive and see if I can run some tests with the drive hooked up to my BlacX Thermaltake, but I don't think you can run all the tests this way.

On a positive note, now that I've got 4gb of RAM, installed a clean Windows 7 64 bit and the SSD drive, the computer is lightening fast for a 5 year old laptop. Great "second" laptop that's for sure.
