Has anyone installed the ASUS 256mb "DDR3" 8600m GT yet... The first link seems to have an accurate photo of it.. The other links seem to just have a generic photo. I wonder if it would work as is, or require a bios flash?? It looks like that the heat sink should line up just fine with the DDR3 memory chips.

Some claim it only work with C90 ,but i think V-BIOS Flash will work

BTW i really appreciate if someone can send C90 V-BIOS(8600M GT DDR2 & DDR3) copy to me

Glad to hear your thinking the same..

Perhaps our current VGA BIOS could just be flashed into it.. I know that older MXM type-II (non-directx-10) notebooks have no hope, as MXM-upgrade already tried it. But our ACER 5920G is pretty much of the same current santa rosa mold that the ASUS GS1 shares. Heck, it may even work just as is??

I may take the plunge and give it a try.. Worst comes to worst, i'll have to somehow compare the factory ACER to ASUS vga BIOS and see whats needs to be changed to make it work... Again, if anything at all??

    $254.00 shipped,

And yes, that would help "alot" if you could compare the BIOS of the two cards in advance. :)

Ouch, $256.44 for the ddr3 + shipping fees to Malaysia. Man, i don't know, seems like not a very good deal to me, i would rather save my money down can invest into my future desktop.

Still, for those who can use notebook only...

Anyway, the main advantage of ddr3 is it feature higher bandwidths and smaller chip footprints and will consume less power and generate less heat thus will be able to clock higher than ddr2. So, higher gpu clock vs higher gpu ram? Lol, very obvious.

$256.44? That's about RM700+ in Malaysia, I think I'll wait until after my warranty's void before upgrading it (IF it actually works after flashing VGA Bios)
The performance difference is supposedly by leaps and bounds.

I've O/C mine to score a generous amount of 4418 in 3Dmark06, though some guy managed to O/C his DDR3 8600m gt to get a score about 5200, give or take a few hundred.

Though even with the additional cost for the upgrade, it still costs less than the Asus G1s

    yes there are. 3dmark 2006 @ 1024x768 i get 6500 marks on xp. asus g1s.
570 core, 1276 shader and 810 mem. You will achive around 4900-5000 marks at the same clocks with the 512 version on the new 5920g models. there's a 1500 mark diference.

Maybe it's because the Asus G1s is the Gddr3 version? Bigspin was talking about if both versions were Gddr2, the difference wouldn't be that big as Gddr2 can't stream data that fast.

Most definitely that the Gddr3 version would smash the Gddr2 version of it..

wouldn't it be better to upgrade with a 8800m when it's available? I mean if those 8600m DDR3 chips are available now it wouldn't take that long.. Those 8800m chips gonna fit on the MXMII slot also right?

The 8700m is MXM type III, so no, I don't think you can fit it in 5920g. The GDDR3 upgrade would prove very productive though. Just imagine the possibility of overclocking to gain a score of 5000+ in 3d mark 06 (resolution's 1280*800, of course).

That's like about 700 points more, and WITHOUT the driver crashing during certain intervals (rare, but it still kills the mood)

I ordered the asus card 8600m gt 256 ddr3 for my acer aspire 5920g.

It has to fit and will, and has to work correctly, no bios update/hacking is necessary.

    MXM Type 2

MXM works like the PCX card in the PC. Just it is a notebook video card.

Notebook mainboard has the bios to work with the mxm cards.

MXM has its own bios to manage its components.

I will share my results with you when the card will be here.

    Taril,

Good luck on your install. Let me know what you find.

I put the 512MB DDR2 version in my 7720; and I *did* have to flash the bios on the card with an Acer bios.

Where did you find an Acer bios for the ddr3 card? Or did you manage to get an acer version of the card?

7720 mainboard accept only MXM Type I.
8600m GT 512MB DDR2 is MXM Type II.
    Of course you had problem.

Actually, the 7720 mainboard is MXM Type II.

I *have* a 8600M GT 512MB DDR2 in it and working fine. If the 7720 was MXM Type I, it wouldn't even work period.

The question was, have you been able to use the 256MB DDR3 version? And where did you get your bios file from?

Actually Acer Aspire 7720 only comes with 8600m GT DDR2 512 MB, mainboard accepts MYM II and I.

Aspire 7720Z only with 8400M GT, mainboard only accepts MXM Type I.

If you Have 7720, why did you have to change your vga? and why did you do a vga bios flash?

Tha card mamages DDR3 not the mainborad. Where did you get these technical informations? From ASUS or ACER?

My 7720-6395 came with the 8400M GT. It was most definitely MXM-II. Also, I have the service manual for the 7720 (thanks to someone else on this board) and it clearly shows that acer uses a single motherboard for the entire 7720 series.

You may want to do a search for the service manual and download it since it obviously has information in it that you will need.

If you put an 8600M GT into a 7720 that was not specifically made by Acer then it will not work. But you don't have to take my word for it; there are plenty of others here who have done this. Then there is the fact that you'll see for yourself when you plug a non-acer card into your machine and it doesn't work.

There is a V-BIOS on the card that is placed there by the manufacturer. You can aquire these BIOS files from the techpowerup site.

Since Acer does in fact make an 8600M GT (as you pointed out), it was a simple matter for me to download the bios to that and flash it into mine.

However, as of last Friday no one has a record of any Acer 8600M GT card with DDR3. So the big mystery is whether you can use the DDR2 BIOS on the DDR3 card. No one has tried to put a DDR3 card in a 7720 yet. Which is why I want to know if you have any success.

Definitely to the 512MB DDR2 version.

Taril says he has ordered the 256MB DDR3 version to place into a 5920.

As soon as he tells us whether it works or not; we will know if it can be done.

Good to know. We will see soon. (1 or 2 weeks, cause it comes from Taiwan)
So, be here to help if there would be any problem with it.
It could be a good chance to all who wanna upgrade MXM II card in notebooks.
    Especially this: 90-C1CIZA-HXBN00Z
I have already modified my 8600m gs bios.
Is there any 8600M GT 256 DDR2 acer bios somewhere? Someone should grab his firmware .

What about 8920G card?? Will it be possible to put it to 5920G?? ACER 8920G has Geforce 9650M GS which has ddr3 memory and it's acers video card so no Vbios mods will have to be done.

Acer has no 8600m with DDr3 mem, only with DDR2. Ive already checked them.

If 9640M is MXMII it will works with 5920g without any problem. But nvidia says its mxm III.

I have upgrade my Aspire 5720G from 8400M GS to a 8600M GT. But where can I see if it is a DDR2 or DDR3 card?

    Thx
