Ok so i've only had my Acer 5920G for about 3 weeks and now it wont turn on no more.

The southbridge chip seems to be getting really warm, but doesnt have any other sign of life. I plug in the power cord and it goes blue but nothing else happens at all. The little charge light at the bottom is just blank.

I bought this from Comet and with only having the laptop for 3 weeks i cant really be doing with it been sent away for repair, surely there is some sort of protection where they must swap it for another or something? what about all the data i have on it, i dont want that getting into the wrong hands!

    what do i do?

Hi Adam20. As far as backing up your data you could purchase an external USB Hard Drive case and put that hard drive in it to transfer the data to another machine. Note: check with your warranty provider before removing the hard drive as this may void your warranty. As far as a repair or exchange goes you will really want to go through your reseller. Most likely they will want to bring the laptop in for repair.

Cheers for the advise, best add that i am actually an IT technician so i know what to do with regards to my data, but i dont want it getting into the wrong hands, i need to get back up and running rather than spending hours and hours destroying all the data on my hard drive, and because i wiped Home Premium and installed my Ultimate license on the laptop there is then the issue of that as obviously i cant restore the 2 disk backup with the laptop not powering on...

Getting the data off my laptop is no problem at all, i already have one of those devices. The issue im mainly discussing here is where do i actually stand, i've had this piece of kit for less than a month and its failed on me. I dont want it sending away for repair, i need access to it as its pretty much my only computer as i rarely have access to any other when im away from home which is the majority of the time. Not only that but like i said, i have personal files held on that machine, banking details etc, personal documents. I want to mainly know where i stand with it all, can i walk into Comet and have the laptop exchanged for another?

Try this.. It may work.. 1st take the battery out.. Then pull out the Hard Drive, and then push it back in to re-seat it.. Then put back the battery and give it a try. :)

Am I right to say that you're worrying about your data privacy?
If so, why not just use some software to thoroughly wipe the hard drive by connecting to another computer?

Ok an update for you all, i took the laptop to comet this lunch time and they ran diagnostics over the phone with acer, couldnt resolve it so acer has given them an authorisation code to have the laptop sent back to them. Comet are replacing my laptop with a brand new one which i just have to collect later so things arent too bad after all. got all my data off the drive and ran a quick erase

Picked up my replacement laptop, so far so good, and I fitted my turbo memory chip into it without a problem as that arrived yesterday.

Only thing is i cannot enable the performance features on the HDD now that it is installed, i remember a lot of people saying they came accross this, was there any fix for it?

It seems that with certain system configuration you'll not benefit from HD write cache. Therefore, the option cannot be enabled.

Just to note: an old TravelMate I had stopped starting up. No power to the system. Solution: take the battery out and put it back in again.
8 - 12 months later (I have a bad memory for some things), the computer packed up completely and now I'm using an iBook G4.
Not exactly great for internet usage, but then again, macs are so incompatible.
