Well... here we go again.
To be sure I used the search first, but only found some articles about it in the Dell part of the forum.
You probably all heard about the news that the 84, 8600GT and even more graphic chips could potentially be faulty due to an error in the manufacturing process. When I heard about it I concluded that this had to be the cause of problems I've had since I bought the laptop.
As soon as I upgraded to custom drivers, the chip became subjected to crashing. Every driver. Almost always with the same phenomena.
Screen started flashing, game crashed, I get this exclamation mark in the tray saying 'driver has stopped and recovered', cpu/mem clocked down, and reboot required.
I knew that, since it only happend after multiple minutes or sometimes even not at all, it had to have something to do with heat. But it would sometimes even run stable at 95.C for several hours. When I heard the chip was vulnerable to (rapid) heat change (right?) it made perfect sence to me.
Now, here comes the question.
Will Acer come up with a solution soon? I checked for BIOS upgrades (not sure whether to look for video bios, and where) but there arent any yet. Should I call Acer about the problems I'm experiencing and why I felt like contacting them about it now (now that I know the cause) or should I wait for my GPU to fry? I do have a 3 year pick-up-and-return warranty but GPU's only tend to fail after multiple years.
Or am I perhaps blowing things up a bit and does it actually have an other cause?

definately call and complain... until people start voicing thier problems they won't begin to fix them! metntion the NVIDIA chip issue and get that noted in your file so later when/if it does fry you can say "I TOLD YOU SO"
the only thing the BIOS upgrade is gonna do is delay the death of the card by lowering the temps at which the FAN turns on... so it's just a stop gap effort to see that the parts make it thru warranty IMO
i'd be raising so much hell about the NVIDIA CARD that they either repalce the card or the whole laptop... and everytime you experience a graphics issue related to the card, email and call them... emails are your way of showing you tried to help them pin-point the problems and solve them... thier canned replys can only hurt thier case when it comes time to actually replace the PC!
keep records.... record phone calls.... be prepaired!! -
I'd call - if you're under warranty they should arrange a free pick-up and 2-week repair! No point in waiting for the system to be unusable.
You should probably downgrade to unmodded drivers too. They might ignore the issue completely and say that it's your drivers causing the problem! -
also remove any upgraded components and replace them with the originals,, if you don't have the originals,, just send in w/o the component. and then if they ask claim it was causing a conflict with another driver or piece of software so you had to remove it for system stability..
