    Hey,
I'm actually thinking of doing a review for this site myself.
I read the section about "submitting our own reviews". Is there anyone here who actually did it before?

I think you can just start a new thread titled "Acer Aspire 5920G review" and post your review there. Then after that maybe PM the admin and ask him to put it on the front page?

    Hi guys,

I got really fed up waiting for journalists to come up with something interesting so I asked owners of the 5920 to write their own reviews.
So far I've got three (I'm trying to get five) and they're all pretty damned good:
    - the first from darkspark88 (linked above) http://www.theacerguy.com/2007/07/12/acer-aspire-5920-user-review/

    - the second from Iain (still waiting for pictures) here: http://www.theacerguy.com/2007/08/04/another-user-review-of-the-aspire-5920/
    - the third, a US-spec review from Tom that you can find here: http://www.theacerguy.com/2007/08/07/toms-us-spec-aspire-5920-review/

Don't let my name put you off - I didn't edit a single word ;-)

Well I actually got a reply from NRB about doing a review. I guess I will do one as soon as possible.

    Thanks Patrick.

Pity NBR got there first. I'm giving away a Bluetooth Dongle for each one I publish seeing as Acer "forgot" to install it ;-) (two more to go)

Look forward to linking to yours anyway!

P.S. why do you need that many reviews anyway? :p

    Ever read The Cluetrain Manifesto?

The Acer Guy is an unofficial blog right, but it's by someone who works for Acer (me) and therefore has two identities and two paths to tread.

However, I'm *seriously* tired of the standard "me write - you follow" format of most corporate/company blogs so I thought I'd turn the tables completely and get real people to write stuff that might scare the bejesus out of some managers if they ever read it and at the same time show those that do that people who buy Acer computers are actually a pretty cool bunch who know their sh*t.

It seems that in the UK you either get Bluetooth, or Turbo Memory. Hence the dongle offer...

I tell ya, sitting on this wall is an eye opener :-D

Well my 5920G has shipped today and should be with me tomorrow or friday.
UK version and it looks like it has bluetooth and not the turbo memory which is what I was looking for. It seems that its easier to put the memory in the machine rather than the inbuilt bluetooth (I hate dongles).

From what I have read the Turbo memory seems a bit of a waste of time .. is it actually worth adding?

    Hey Patrick.

That's the CNet UK review Acer totally freaked out about when they saw it.

In fact tempers rose so much that CNet UK actually changed the wording from
"If you thought the outside was bad, you'll vomit when you see the interior."
    to
"If you thought the outside was bad, just wait until you see the inside."

    See for yourself... http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39030092,49290611,00.htm

Even I couldn't resist having a go at them myself.

And you winder why I want real people to review their notebooks?

BTW, Have a look at what Jing's just done:

That review is pretty accurate! They spotted all the little details, such as the strong screen reflections, heat, and battery life.

They mentioned that C&C 3 "interrupts time and time again". Im betting this was probably based on using the Acer Stock drivers, which are terrible. The 3D Mark 06 score was also reflective of the Acer stock display drivers. I got 3188, Notebookcheck got 3174.

Haven't tried 3Dmark06 with modded drivers.

Now i'm waiting to see how long it takes to get the 5920G into one of the popular gaming magazines.

Acer shouldn't have offered the Best Buy 1.5ghz version. They should have made them all 2.0ghz, with 2.2ghz optional.

The review has been translated from German so the keyboard layout is qwertz with additional keys for German letters like "ä" or "ö".

hey guys do u have any idea about how the 5920g performs in supreme commander and C&C3 ...
im just dying to know if its worth getting the 5920g instead of a toshiba gaming satellite with a 7900gs ..and oh i dont mind having a bigger heavier machine as long as it plays recent games better cuz i doubt that the DX10 features in the 8600gt will help much cuz even the mightiest of 8800's cant pull any decent fps in DX10 games ...
so please guys help me and i think thats the place to get help (acer section)

    Supreme Commander
    Resolution: 1024x768, Details: "medium" - 16-44fps, Flickers at fights, if zoomed-in ~10fps
    Resolution: 1024x768, Details: "high" - 11-35fps, Flickers at fights, if zoomed-in ~8fps

    playable, but with limitations

    Command and Conquer III
Resolution: 1024x768, Details: "high", AA out - 29-30fps, well playable
Resolution: 1280x800, Details: "high", AA out - 16-30fps, interrupts time and again

I am 100% shure that it is not worth it. 8600GT barely reaches raw performance of 7900GS and you don't need the DX10 stuff in it. It will be a waste of money, you have enough power to wait for more powerfull machines to come out, so don't buy this one

so do u think that both of them arent worth the money now ??
cuz i still think the toshiba is a decent machine for the price that i found (1730$) and i think the acer may have the advantage of upgradability of the cpu and GFX but whats confusing me that i cant get any review of the toshiba with recent drivers in Supreme Commander and C&C3 ...
so im still unable to fix my mind on one of the machines and go get it plus the dreaded DX10 has made everything so confusing as damned MS is pushing all the great games dev's to go exclusive for DX10 and that just sucks !

You can get more fps/better performance by useing a mix of the following... Useing better, more current video card drivers, and or over-clocking the video card, and or switching out the processor to a 2.2ghz or 2.4ghz, and or adding more system ram, and last but not least, for performance rather then fps.... switching out to a 7,200rpm hard drive to keep access times moving along.

You can also purchase Asus's 512mb 8600m GT w/3DDR ram from there spare parts and install it in your 5920G (a 10-minute install)... Or any other MXM Type II video card module from Nvidia/ATI as they come out.

I'd have to say that 5920G will be around for along time... And that Vista DirectX-10 will get better with patches and service packs.

It also helps to have the latest patches from the video game manufactures installed.

All and all... The BenchMarking scores are pretty decent for the cost of the 5920G.... I mean you could spend $4,000.00+ and configure an Alienware or Sager with SLI (dual video cards) and faster processor.. But is that much more cost really worth it??

I believe your talking about the 8600m gt 512mb mxm II card thats for the asus c90s? I asked about this mxm card in the gaming section. I think its ddr2, but anyway, it doesn't seem to work in the standard mxm II slot.

Hopefully a 8600m gt 512 ddr3 mxm2 card will come out for purchase, or just wait and hope for a 8800/9600 down the road...

Laskys have this for £760 and Laptops Direct have it for £799.00

Would it be worth ringing up LD to see if they'll undercut Laskys do you think?

Are you kidding? They can't hold stock long enough to need to undercut a competitor. Additionally, Laptops Direct sell the Turbo Memory model, whilst Laskys sells the bluetooth.

Turbomemory isn't worth it imo if you have 2 GBs RAM. In the Asus forums doesn't show very much difference for gaming, but does show during things like virus scan and such if you have 1GB (whereby it would be faster than a non-turbomemory model). So i think the £40 discount is great since you get bluetooth. :)
