There's only one type really, SPDIF to 3.5mm.

Your laptop uses the 3.5mm audio out port.

Can't you just use the audio that comes through the HDMI cable?

i can and I do that already, but I also want to connect directly to speakers. I don't understand why they included the spdif ability, but don't provide any cable for it and I can't find any other places that sell it

that cable will actually work. i know i said you need a coaxial before, but its optical that you need. i'm using it on my 3050 aspire with no problems. sorry!!

are you trying to go directly to the speakers or through a receiver? if you're going directly to speakers then you don't need an SPDIF cable( digital signal, wiki) you can use a this cable

what speakers are you trying to connect to? make, model?

that's what I thought intially, but it appears that it's not the same type. The cable you suggested is optical (uses red light) and Acer 5920G does not have that

yes it does, it goes into the same hole as the headphones. the spdif module is built in and the jack accepts 2 different connections.

    ^I do

This eBay shop sells almost all cables known to mankind very cheap  :D :
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MHP-Computer-Services_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm

The name of the connector for your laptop is "mini-TOSLink"

Normally you are going to connect the other side of the cable to a stereo or whatever and the other side is called just "TOSlink"

Link straight to mini-TOSlink to TOSLink cables:
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MHP-Computer-Services_Audio-Video-Cables_Mini-TOSLink-to-Optical-SPDIF_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ2062971QQftidZ2QQtZkm

Or you could just buy like I did a normal TOSLink to TOSLink cable and a mini-TOSLink adaptor.
For the mini-TOSLink adaptor just search eBay "mini-TOSLink adaptor" :p

Cheers for all your help, i popped in to Maplin today on the off chance they'd have one of these and they did and it was only about £3 looks exactly the same as yours and the sound is absolutly phenominal.

This 5920g has been the best laptop investment i have ever made, i have never known something for this price to have so many useful features, absolutely amazing.

    Hi Santa,

I also have a 5920G (Great laptop) and I am trying to get my logitech 5.1 speakers to play through them.

I bought a mini TOSlink adapter (Like the one in your picture) and I am going to buy a cable just now, however, in the picture you show of the cable I don't fully understand what i do with the other end?

Probably a straight forward answer but I dont want to waste money on a cable that I dont need.

Its just the usuall 3 coloured cables coming off the speakers so can you help me please?

    Many thanks

    Hey guys,

I also have a 5920g and have tried all sorts to get sound coming out of my Onkyo 605. I have it linked via hdmi but i get no audio. I have also tried spdif from the headphone socket to the opt in on my amp but i still get no audio.

Anyone know what the problem might be? I have set the sound playback to the correct settings too. But i get nothing, and you all say the sound is amazing, so where am i going wrong, im banging my head against the wall here!!!

What drivers are you using for your realtek? I cant get sound through either hdmi of spdif its driving me mad!!! I get the lovely pic through hdmi and thats it, please point me in the right direction....

Sorry to bring this topic back from the grave, but I have the same problem as the quoted poster and I cannot see this question answered anywhere. So I have cheap Logitech 5.1 Speaker set that has only 3 x 3.5mm Stereo jacks for the 5.1 sound. Since with the Acer 5920G you cannot just plug them in into the headphones/mic/line in jacks and set it as 5.1 output I guess I need some kind of optical to 3 x 3.5mm female cable. Does this thing exist? Or how else do I connect my surround speakers?

    Thnx

Hmmm... I no expert on 5.1, but think you are confusing standards.

The headphone output can be switched between analogue (which is a normal voltage output to feed phones or a line level input on an amp etc) or switched to "optical".
SPDIF via optical is intended to feed a suitable DAC with TOSLINK optical inputs. That is the only form in which the SPDIF is "outputted" as far as I know from a laptop.
If the inputs to the Logitech are "analogue" (wires in other words) then you don't use a TOSLINK 3.5mm plug. You need a normal 3.5 mm plug split to feed them while using the normal analogue output.
If you have a separate DAC, then you need a 3.5mm TOSLINK plug and optical cable feeding the DAC.

I found this sort of thing,
    http://www99.epinions.com/review/LO...CA_PLUGS_TO_A_SINGLE_1_8/content_455537888900

As I say I am no expert on 5.1
