The power light above the machine indicates that it is off, no sound etc. the ac adapter still runs on another machine. machine has 3 years static use.

is it an obvious mainboard failure?

can i safely buy a new mainboard?

Is it worth fixing seeing as the GFX is Nvidia 8600m and may fail anytime (although it never plays 3d games so surely should last 3 times longer than a heated one???).

should i sell the ram, graphics, processor, and laptop for spares and buy a different one to be cost effective?

What steps should i take to figure it out, fix it, else to find my sister an new one?

I guess you can't turn on the laptop at all, right? If you don't see any light on or the screen that means there is no power in the laptop. Probably the power supply unit in your laptop is dead, not the motherboard. You can take to a technician and check it out. Careful though there is a program in Sky here where the IT technicians in London were copying files and passwords from customer's laptops. Can you turn on the laptop with the battery?
I bought a new laptop since my 5920G motherboard died. I gave it to a IT technician and checked it. If it is the mbr, I don't think it worths buying a new mbr, it is very costly.

In the meantime you can try the following (it works in many cases but it didn't in my laptop):

Remove the power cord and battery from the laptop
Hold down the ON button for 30secs (dispersing all internal voltage)
Plug in only the power cord
    Turn on

    Did it work?
If so, shutdown and re-insert the laptop battery
    Turn back on

Let us know if that worked

It's still working! The power adaptor inside the motherboard is defective.

The battery had zero electric power for over a year, and "no battery detected" in windows. battery was left on the side. it may have put strain on the the power line interface of the mainboard.

the power line interface of the mainboard has now completely died, but the battery has come to life again. BIZARRE! however it still sais ''no battery detected''. it does run on battery only mode.

when the battery is in, the power line detection light works, but without it, no lights no power line.

dont know yet if the battery is able to recharge, hopefully yes.

The mainboard has actually failed as the power adaptor plugs directly into the mainboard. and all the transformations to 5v and 12v lines from the 19v one happen in the mainboard.

i'll recommend she gets extra breakdown coverage as it could fail at any time!
