I think this is going to be one of those things you will be a pioneer of.
What are you doing that needs a faster processor? Unless you are doing heavy video editing or number crunching, then the bottle neck is more likely to be the 5200 rpm hard drive or the video card.
I believe the biggest bottleneck on a 15.4 laptop like ours is the hard drive. -
someone upgraded there 5920 from 1.5ghz to 2.4ghz
if you want to speed up your system get a faster hard drive
i got a hitachi 7k200 drive and its made my notebook a whole lot faster -

i searched and PM'ed one of the guys who did it. i was just looking for a step by step guide/pics. im doing this upgrade mostly for gaming since the processor is what holds me back on most games.

There are two things that really make the 5920G slow down.
Textures and Shadows/Shading. The latter are the video card. Nothing you can do about that, short of upgrading it. However high resolution textures make the system chug not due to the graphics card, and not due to memory, but because the read speed from the hard drive is only so fast.
Where a faster processor comes into play for the games is for stuff like physics and such, which in gaming isn't really an issue.
So I think it is safe to say that a hard drive upgrade would be more worth your time and money. -
i dont know a lot about pc stuff but when i go to canyourunit.com to see if i can play a game i want, the processor is what ussually doesnt pass. how much do hard drives go for?

if you get the hitachi 7k200 which is the fastest drive you can get for a laptop its about 110 uk pounds at the moment

ERIK-A game may say it requires a 2ghz processor to play, but it isn't taking into account having 2 cores. Which makes ours 3ghz, if you go by that. However that isn't really anything to go off of, as even a single core processor of today would be way faster than a single core processor of 3 years ago, even though they have the same 2ghz rating. So what I am trying to say, is that you can't go by ghz ratings anymore, as they are not an indicator of speed.
The 5920g will play the latests, most best and demanding games of today. So I don't know which game you can't play. You will have to turn down a few options, like shadows, and you may not be able to use Ultra High resolution textures, but everything else should run at max. neither of the two would be affected by the faster CPU. However the textures could be improved if you have a faster hard drive, based off of everything I have seen and experimented with. -
I've upgraded my hard drive to a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200GB drive. It's made a huge performance increase, and seems to be running cooler than the 5400RPM drive that came with it. I went for the Seagate over the Hitachi Travelstar only because nowhere seemed to have the 200GB Travelstar's in stock.

Did you have to do anything with drivers? links if needed
Any other instructions you have for taking the laptop apart. What all did you have to do. Did you do an image copy of your old Hard drive, or did you start with a clean install and everything?
Thank you. I am interested in this upgrade. -
