So I wanted to try out WinXP, to see the performance difference.
At first, the WinXP setup wasn't able to see the HDD. So I changed the SATA Controller Bios mode to IDE mode. (was AHCI for Vista).
I managed to install so have a dual booted system. However I can't use IDE mode for Vista. (must switch SATA bios each time).
Everything installed fine. Even got 3dMark06 increase of 150 points (not much lol). Oh and CrystalMark of 100K instead of 90K on Vista.
But I'd like to use AHCI mode for WinXP. Saw a link in a WinXP 5930g Guide, however that link was out of date.
The driver was called: "Intel(R) ICH9M M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2929 Driver".
Cheers!

I believe this here Intel Matrix Storage Manager is what you're looking for to enable AHCI mode in XP.
-
Oh I tried that, but it gave me an error saying this couldn't be installed?
Or its not correct for my system? Hmmm... I'll screenshot the problem when I get back home. -
I could be entirely wrong, though, but this is the only thing on Intel's website that I could see.

The installer detects the IDE driver and therefore refuse to install. You should extract the files from the setup package and tried to install it manually. You probably will have to force it coz XP won't accept it(because of the installed IDE driver).
To extract setup package go to the command prompt, then go to the place where IATA85ENU.EXE is located then type IATA85ENU -a -p C:\Intel. All files will be extracted in C:\Intel -
Ok, seems as you have the AHCI driver enabled in Vista, and disabled in XP.
Four ways:
- You can either enable AHCI in XP. Its tedious process, but possible nonetheless....
- You can reinstall XP with AHCI enabled, and slipstream the AHCI driver into the XP install.
- You can reinstall Vista, with AHCI disabled in the BIOS.
- You can disable Vista's AHCI driver.
So, what's that you would want to do ?? -
Rather keep AHCI - all things i've read about it thus far shows it to be decent for multitasking.
So I think the first thing I want to do is to install Drivers in XP temporarily.
But later on permanently slipstream it on my nLite XP. But I've never slipstreamed anything ^^;;; -
You can reinstall XP with the slipstreamed driver, and keep the file structure intact while installing. This way, your data in the XP partition won't be erased, and only the Windows Folder, and system files will be replaced.
Re-enabling AHCI in XP, I think requires alot of fiddling with the inf and registry files, so it is a bit tough. -
Well I don't mind either. But guess I'll just reinstall XP then. So how do I slipstream it? And with which file?
-
Just updating will be a lot more faster..
Here is a step-by-step if you decide to go that way:

It might not work that way ATG, since the ICH8/9 are troublesome when enabling AHCI, according to this.
-
You mean the OP could get a nasty BSOD if he/she mess something up?
Yeah you're probably right
I've installed AHCI by the above method once, worked like a charm
