A few months ago I purchased a Pre-Release 2.16 mhz core 2 duo off ebay to ugrade my 8204. I have used it with Windows XP during these months with no problems and great performance.

I decided to upgrade to windows vista and I chose to try out the
64 bit version but it wont load. I get an error message stating:

"Setup cannot run on this version of the operating system. To install Windows please try booting from the install media."

So I load the 32-bit version instead and everything works perfectly.

The bios I have is 3516. I tried to upgrade to 3517 but get blue screen with WinPlash. Cant figure out how to upgrade with Phlash.

Would the next bios make a difference in getting Vista to recognize the merom processor or is it just because of this pre-release chip that it's not working?

To verify, I ran CPU-Z and it recognizes the processor as:

Name: Intel Mobile Core 2 duo t7400
    Code Name: Merom
    Family: 6
    Model: F
    Revision: B0

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, James

You can't run the upgrade to 64-bit from a 32-bit version of XP. You'll need to do a full install, if I remember correctly.

the above is from an earlier post I had...you need to make a dos boot disk and then use phlash6 to boot 3517 bios. here is a pic showing 3517 installed on my 8204

Ok, I did just what it said to do. In the menu after holding down "f2" on sart up, I made computer boot from the DVD drive. I did it wrong the first time.
It works now and the OS is very noticeably quicker.
I just hope I get everything I want to run on it without going back to 32 bit. W'ell see.

    Thanks,
    James

I think you can clean install, but not upgrade from XP.

You can clean install either x86 or x64 versions.

For upgrade, x86 XP can only 'upgrade' to x86 vista.
x64 XP can only upgrade to x64 vista.
(If you're using the 'upgrade' option)
