This is absolutely crazy. The laptop came back to me in worse shape than it was sent off. C drive was wiped, several very large scratches that were not there before, and the CD drive simply does not work. I tried loading in a CD-R at first, and it didn't recognise it, though it might be the CD. Having the CD in at startup actually slowed down the whole boot sequence immsenely.

Since then I've tried it with several different CDs, DVDs, whatever and none of them work. The DVD drive just chugs a long and never gets anywhere.

I can't afford to send this back to be fixed now because 3 weeks was an insane time for me to be without a laptop. How costly/difficult would it be for me to replace the DVD drive myself?

THis is the noise it makes

The computer recognises the drive, but no disks work in it. I had some hardware guys look at it today, they say it's ed and needs to be replaced.

However the SSD in my EEEPC is also ed, so I'll be stuck without a computer.

Get only same brand ..same model replacement DVD drive.

Or even, a used one from another Acer laptop.

ACER laptops , recognize well only specific predefined by the ACER drives.

Any drive will work , but the system could have booting delays , due the non ACER approved drives .

Try seeing if the DVD drive works outside of Windows.
Pop in a bootable disc like the Acer recovery discs (just don't use 'em!), and see if that boots.

Having a CD in startup will always slow down your bootup, because the BIOS is checking to see if it can/should boot from it.

Kittie, I seriously feel for you. This Aspire 6920G just seems like problem after problem. Have you considered hiring an exorcist to get rid of your tech demons? ;)

I ordered a replacement drive, cost me €45 which is a lot for me but I'm glad to not have to deal with Acer again.

Unfortunatley you get charged through the for a lot of things in Sweden, as far as I know. And I would have too if I'd have boughti t from Ireland(got it from the UK). If I get charged customs I'm going to seriously beat the out of our finance minister.
