    hi everyone,

I think i have a major problem with my computer. I tried running gparted to partition my drive. in order to create a new partition for windows 7. upon opening gparted it showed only one hard drive and it's capacity was 298gb and labeled unallocated. It said if I want to partition it will wipe the whole disk. so I canceled in fear that it would wipe my c and d drives. I exited and rebooted my computer and now all i get is a black screen with a white flashing line in the top left corner. I did switch in the bios to boot from hdd back to first and I also took the cd out. Is there I way I can fix this without doing a Factory restore? Hope someone can help me and faster the better. All contributions are appreciated. Thanks

did you save all your work on to the D: drive ?
    if yes, then thats safe.
have you done any back-ups lately ?
if yes, then do the factory restore (if its still working). Then restore back-up.
    if no, your screwed.
have you got the or did you burn the recovery DVD's ?
if not, you could be screwed even further.
but its looking more like a factory restore from Alt+F10. which is the faster option than the dvd's.
but after that its update time, which can take hours :(

Good luck mate, and welcome to the forum.
    Phil :D

If so, you are good to go.

D (Data) is always safe with a Recovery.....But then you need to re-install all your Programs on C Drive (where the Registry sits).

What I normally do is make backups to D. For example...Excel files of importance. If the file is saved on D and you have re-installed C drive, Excel will not be recognised as a readable file until Excel is installed again.

Install Excel again and all is good.....

The actual files are never lost. Just waiting to be interpreted by the "host" program.

I hope that simplifies things for you.

    Cheers

yes i was aware of that, but its just a pain to have to reinstall all the software. Especially games they take a while. I guess i do what have too. So should i install vista and then upgrade to 7 or just stay away from windows 7 for now?

Why not install Windows 7 to the D: partition?
I repartitioned my hard drive during my last clean install of Vista to make sure I had enough room.
My hard drive is currently partitioned as such:
    -256MB WinRE
    -50GB Vista
    -25GB Win7
    -222GB Data

    Good here too Hoggie :D

Heck, I wish I could help more here. Like I said in an earlier post though "My usefulness here is limited now" .No moans, groans or anything else from me.

A lappie that gives no problems warrants no problem solving. And so far, my Aspie 5684 takes all that is thrown at it with ease still.

Hence no real help from me (without guessing) to try and help others....

How's your little cute little Angel :D :D em ehrr Gramps?

    Cheers,
    Theo

how did you do that that is what i was trying to do until this problem arose of vista not booting? so now i need to factory install i think if this problem can't be fixed otherwise. or once i reinstall can i move my data on D to C and then repartition d and then install windows 7 on D? at this point though if i want my computer to work i need to factory install correct?

i could do that, but i'd rather not wait. i'm one of those impulsive, impatient, gotta fix now people. I know from past experiences being like that sometimes makes things worse in the long run. put can't resist my instincts and impulses. :D

Well, like I said, I did a clean install. That means not using the Acer recovery media, and deleting any Acer-unique partitioning on my hard drive.
Since Vista's installation procedure allows you to partition your hard drive before installation, I was able to get everything set up properly.

I'm not sure if installing Win7 to D: would goober up anything in Acer's customized MBR (Master Boot Record).

Oh, and here's something that might help get your system back up and running short of a full system restore:

okay thanks for everyones help i was able to restore my system as is no data lost via recovery console. i now have the 4 basic acer partitions if i wanted to get windows 7 on one (d drive or make a new partition) how would i go about that avoiding this situation again?

upon inspecting my system my files and apps seem to all be there but certain programs seem to be defective. windows can't load the services needed for wireless internet. Is there a way to repair vista without reinstalling?
