Hi,
Having some issues with my laptop, worked fine to begin with but recently it's not be performing as smoothly as it should or as i'd expect.
Usually what happens is, i'd load a game - any game - it would run ok for ~1 min or maybe two, then the secondary fan will kick in (very loudly) and the game will jutter and FPS would drop from say 30-50 to 5-10, the sound will begin to crackle and it's just not useable.
I've so far found a way around this and its turning the Processor Speed in the empowering technology tab to "low", obviously the laptop doesnt run as fast as it would but it doesnt tend to go crazy on me whenever I try to use it for anything more than Typing.
Also as a side note, is it possible to install Xp on such a laptop, i've had a small look into drivers for Xp but didnt get very far.

any chance you could give us a few bits of info on your laptop.
need OS
model number.
how much ram.
graphics type.
but without that it sounds like a heat issue or to much stuff running in the background..do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and let us know how mant processes you have running.
cheers

Processes wise, 68 (including msn, firefox atm) I dont know much about Vista and alot of is is tagged "Windows" so i'm abit reluctant to turn some of them off. -
have you installed anything between now and then? TV on demand for instance (BBC iPlayer perhaps)
-
Nothing like that, Ive installed games, updates, officer etc but nothing like Iplayer no.
-
Have you checked the temps of your CU and GU whilst this is happening, you say the fan kicks in very loudly.
-
Yeah, ive used a few programs to check the temp and it does go quite high. However, I cant figure why its doing that. I cant find a way for me to just have the fan on at all times to stop it from getting this hot.
I've cleaned the laptop and it happens straight after a clean too. Is there anyway I can set the card to have its fan running more often? To stop it from getting this hot. Tried using something called Rivatuner, but I couldn't find any options to have the fan on with that program. -
I think pretty much all Acer laptops fans are controlled at a BIOS level, which means it's not possible to change the settings. If there is a way I'm sure someone will post, but I've never seen one.
Have you tried undervolting the CPU to reduce temps, this won't affect the performance, and in some cases can reduce the temps by a lot. Here's a good guide on how to do it:

can you get your hands on a cooling pad just too see if it helps ?
then take a look at blackviper.com a very well run site that will let you know which services are safe to switch off.
then in msconfig(if your not sure be carefull in msconfig)see whats running at start-up. if your not sure google it.
keep letting us know how things are going.
Cheers

Went to the site you mentioned, disabled around 20 of the services it advised me to and its worked alot. I also got rid of the empowering technology and the pc has been set to "max" for over a day now, with no problems or slow downs.
The fans come on and off like usual, but when they do everything runs like normal. Thanks!
