Hi, I found this forum via Google for "8 blinks" Acer was wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

I have an Acer 5000 that shows no signs of life except the LED blinks 8 times when the power is pressed.

Acer has the worst support ever. Google that ;)

do you ever get any BEEPS from the speakers??? from looking at the error codes, most POST errors for this (probably all acers) don't have BEEP CODES associated with most errors,,

BTW have you tried connecting to an EXTERNAL MONITOR,, i highly doubt it will do any good,, but desperate times and such...

also see the attached PIC to see if that gives you any ideas about what you should start checking...

thanks for your response. I actually do not get any activity except for those lights. I put my ear up to the machine and there's no fans or anything.

while i doubt it will get you anywhere,, you could try emailing or calling ACER.
i think your next step is to start removing parts from the laptop..

i have seen many bad parts cause laptops to quit booting...
so first remove the AC & BATTERY.. then remove the bottom access pannel..
remove the HDD, WIFI, DVD, RAM, and even the modem if you can get to it easy enough... the more parts disconnected the better the chance of locatiing the problem

now with no RAM installed place the cover back on and plug AC in and try to power the system... it will fail due to not having RAM,, but take notice of the LEDs blinking and the beeps the system makes.....

next (after removing AC) remove bottom cover and place 1 stick of ram in and try to boot again.... note the LEDs and any beeps... are they different??
does it boot?? if not you may have more serious problem (like a bad motherboard)!!!

if you see the screen light up and display the ACER logo,, then you know that one of the parts you removed is the cause of your problem...

so shutdown, remove AC and add one part... then reboot... keep adding parts back one at a time (after shuting down and removing power) until the PC will not boot.... then you know the last part you re-installed is most likely bad.... remove it,, and reinstall all the other parts.... except the part we deemed BAD!..

    omfg...

question: if I'm getting the 8 blinks then that means the switch board is doing it's job, right?

what do you mean by 'SWITCH BOARD'??

the board with all the LEDs and switches i assume?? yes that is working if the power button turns the laptop on

You took the time to count the blinks right......every time
And Acer does not have the worst support ever.

Try Googling Dell failures. Or any other notebook manufacturer. They all have their share of problems. Don't target Acer here.
