Hi,
Im looking at buying a Travelmate 8006Lmi and was wondering if i could ask some questions to anyone who already has one? it would make my descision so much easier...
here goes..
1) Does the laptop come with the HD partitioned into 2? ive seen this on many laptops recently - does the same apply with the 8006Lmi?
2) Does it come with software preinstalled other than windows?
3) How loud is it when working "normally" on it?
4) Whats the build quality like? ive heard good things about acers build quality and was wondering whether the 8006Lmi is reliable and strong
5) How would you rate the screen? Ive heard that statistics arent always a true representation of the quality and clarity of a screen
6) Is it easy to carry? (strange question i know!) its just i used to have a largish 17" Vaio and it was HORRIBLE to carry, not only cos of its size and weight, but bcos it had rele nasty vents rouns it and when you picked it up the plastic moved under youre hands!
7) How fast does it burn CD's? i know the dvd-rw is 4x i think, but i was wondering if it states any figues for Cd burning?
8) is the firewire connection one of those smaller ones? or is it the larger USB2.0 style ones?
9) Another option would be to save some money and buy a P4 3.2 or similar instead of the P M2.0 strange question.. and kinda unrelated but are there any advantages you can think of that the M has over the 4 besides batterly life and heat? And would anyone know what the equivelant P4 is too a 2.0M?
10) would u reccomend any acessories to get with it after experiencing any shortcomings it might have?
Sorry for the long list of questions theyre all the querys i have! an embaressing amount really, if anyone can reply to any of the questions please do! its gonna cost me a lot of money (ie AGES saving up!) and i dont wanna make a mistake!
Thanks in advance to anyone who replys![]

well i havent used it and i doubt alot of people have, but ill try to answer a few of your questions as i have used alot of acer products and did test the acer travelmate 8000 recently.
(1) I didnt see the partition on the 8000, but try sending an email to the acer ppl (www.acer.com) and they will let you know. Then again its not very difficult to partition your hard drive [].
(2) Along with Xp pro it contains Acer Notebook Manager, Acer Launch Manager, Norton AntiVirus and the recovery disk.
(4) Despite its slimline design, the TravelMate 8006LMi feels very solidly built. The screen hinge and lid-locking mechanism are also able to stand up to repeated use. Underneath, Acer's rubberised Disc Anti-Shock Protection (DASP) helps to cushion the hard drive from any untoward bumps when you're on the move.
(6) The TravelMate 8006LMi is a two-spindle 'thin-and-light' system weighing just under 3kg (2.88kg). Considering the features that are packed inside, it's relatively slim at between 3.3cm and 3.6cm high.
(7) fast enough...[]
(8) its the 'IEEE 1394 port' one.
(9) I dont know about you buddy, but the battery and heat is a big enough issue for me (and any novice laptop user)....
(10) A travelling case, an extra baterry and a Life!!
Your welcome []

The equivalent P4 to the 2.0 Dothan used on the TM8006mli is around 3.4-3.6GHz. This is more than you will ever need unless you are doing some supercomputing tasks.
Anyone who wants portability in his/her laptop should go for the Dothan. With a P4 as fast as the 2.0 Dothan you will not be able to get more than an hour of battery life.
e-Machines laptops rock -
1. Yes it comes partitioned into 2 partitions and they are fat32.
I couldn't wait for the 8006 to appear in the UK so I bought the 8003 but the drive will be partitioned similarly.
2. Just little bits and peices of Acer stuff like notebook and launch manager. Norton etc. is left on a CD for you to install.
3. Silent unless you are using 3D whne the fan comes on. Not that the fan is loud.
4. Okay, not the best I've seen but far from the worst.
5. It depends if you are willing to put up with the narrow vertical viewing angle.
6. No plastic moves and the size/weight are published. You are told to watch the top of the case as anything pressing on this can damage the screen according to Acer.
7. I think I saw figures of 24X but I've only ever managed 16X with a few types of disc, all decent like TY - Plextor, Verbatim DLP - mitsibishi.
8. The firewire, general name for iee1394 not signifying 4 pin only as previously hinted at IIRC, is a 4 pin unpowered port.
9. Nothing much apart from heat, lower power usage and noise but it depends what you need a laptop for. If you're going to use a lot of scientific/eng software or anything that requires a lot of fpu power, is compiled to take advantage of P4s etc. you might be better off with a 64bit AMD or P4 based machine.
10. A new hd as Acer supply 4200 rpm ones.
