Does the Acer travelmate 8200 have a socket? I'd like to upgrade it to a memrom when Vista comes around. I'm pretty much sold on this notebook unless the cpu is soldered. I think it might be since you can't choice the processor.

I think the question is a bit more complex than that though, even if the 8200 does have a socket (no idea, I don't want to destroy my warrenty) does the bios support a Memrom (spelling?), does it have enough cooling for it.

Unfortunately until the Memrom's come out, I'm not sure we will know, basically until someone tries it, I think we are stuck wondering (even if we know that the 8200 does have a socket).

I'm not sure if a bios update is in order though. I heard in an intel demonstration, the guy showed a duo performing, turned off the machine, and literally just stuck in the memrom and booted up. That simple. Unfortunately I can't remember the source because over the past two weeks I've been researching notebooks like crazy.

As far as cooling and such, the memroms are supposed to be more power efficient and etc..

Well could be, but I'm going to be a doubting thomas, and until I see it I don't believe it's possible.

As far as I'm concerned Notebooks are NOT upgradable except for RAM changes, even if they demonstrated doing it, whose to say that the bios they were using wasn't specially setup to take either.

Good point on the bios. In my situation, I'm going to college soon, so I'm looking for a good notebook with the oppurtunity to go memrom when vista comes. If I have a manual on how to disassemble it as far as opening the case(like there is for other machines) I feel confident enough I could successfully install a new CPU.

Its a toss up with any machine at the moment looking at memrom combatibility, but the acer to me seems to be the best buy at this performance point.

Yeap, hadn't noticed that, the 1.3314 update (which only seems to be included as part of 1.3315) includes the note

    2. Support Merom 6F1 CPU.
    base\cpu\m2706f1.asm
    zc1.tc1\bcp.asm (add m2706f1 to INSTALL_VS_UPDATE)

So I guess this is probably as close as you can get to saying yes the BIOS is okay, now if someone wants to void their warrenty and determine if it's a socket or not.

Intel actually says that "At Most users will require a bios update"
And it should be simple to swap the current cpu out (shouldn't be soldered to Mainboard) and replace with Merom.
Sure if i get my hands on a Merom i'll upgrade it, but do i NEED 64 support now.. nope. Might not till programs actually use the extra 32 bits. Hell stuff on my 8204 still runs in 16 bit (long live the good old days)

Oh yea. Acer seems to be very good on user upgradability. (plus if it goes cock up put the Yonah back in) :D

Well if the bios update offers support for the memrom, I would think it should have a socket. Why add compatibility if you couldn't add a memrom anyways? Lets just hope one of those employees doesn't have a sick sense of humor.

The 5672 has a socket, so I would expect the 8204 to as well.

Yes, the CPU in the 8204 is socketed.

Money, could you explain how you came across this knowledge? I've searched high and low and could find nothing.

Its just that, I want to be absolutely sure when I part with $2,000.

Yes, buy.com has it for just under 2000 and CompUSA for just above. I'll probably get CompUSA to match it.

    Yellow, thanks man.

I think i might be confused about the item that costs the above mentioned price IN RED FONT. Is it the laptop that costs 2000 or the new merom processor... cause its ok for a laptop, but it is an astronomical and unbelievable price for a processor.

I was referring to the notebook. The Meroms might be $2000 if you want to try to con someone with one right now. :p
