How do you know its running too hot? Mine will turn the fan on full speed periodically and reach 60C but it never severely overheats. How do cooling pads work?

I use a Vantec LapCool2, it reduces my processor tmp by 3-5C, and my HD temp by 4-8C depending on usage. I m not obsessive about it, but it certainly helps when doing large video file conversions, and is pretty useful as a laptop stand when lying in bed with the computer. ;) They definitely reduce the temperature on the bottom of the laptop as well.
For what they cost, I think they are worth the price.

Okkkk... i just didnt know if there are any cooling pads that fit the 8204. I need it to lie in bed with the lap-top and i also want to reduce the temp when playing BF2. Especially after i raise the clocks of my X1600. What's the price range for those things?

I bought mine in Malaysia, so working out the conversion it was, I guess, about $20ish. Worth noting is that is the exact footprint of the average 15" laptop, and so the widescreen hangs over the edge a bit, but it is very secure and stable, and doesn't block any port or speaker access.
Great for lying in bed and not roasting the sheets :)

I use a high-tech solution, I cut a lump of wood to be about the length of the laptop (a little shorter actually) and place the back of the laptop on it, while the front is on the "desk" (I actually use a lap tray but).

This allows air to flow nicely under the laptop and keeps the vents clear. This allows it to run very well while playing EQ2.
