has anyone successfully upgraded their 8920G that had the Intel 3945ABG card to a new wifi card to include N?

I have purchased not one but two new wifi mini cards using the Atheros 5008 chipset and even with a third antenna I cannot connect to my network. I put the old card back in and boom instant connection. I cant reason as to why this is so difficult.

I have the latest driver, its showing as functioning in the system properties but no matter what, I cannot connect to my network.

    PLEASE HELP :(

Acer why oh why did you cripple such a nice laptop

i'm betting you have to setup the network connection for the new adapter..

i had to do this when just updating drivers...

if that doesn't help then you can try the latest driver from

    www.atheros.cz

i doubt it is as much of an acer issue as a driver issue with VISTA 64

no joy. What I dont understand is that when I put in the old 3945 ABG card, boom my wireless networks show up no matter how many times I take it out and put it back in. Since my SSID is broadcasting, why couldnt the new card immediately identify them????

I am sure that the Atheros is not compatible with the 8920G. A wise upgrade would have been the 4965AGN. The atheros is not shown in the parts list, so even if it is detected by the BIOS, the card is not initiated, irrespective of what windows shows, because the BIOS is responsible for the initiation/functioning of the H/W.

(Try out the 4965AGN if in need of an upgrade, they're available cheap on Ebay :))

it's a driver issue andy... i'm running a 5008 but i'm running it in WINXP not VISTA 64...

and anytime i switch cards i have to resetup my network for the new card...
it's just a huge hastle until you get the device setup

the 5008 is not in the parts list for my PC either... the hardest part is finding the correct driver (with XP) so i can see why he is having the issues he has with VISTA 64....

i guarntee that if he loaded XP and used the drivers i've posted links to, that the card would work for him.
i know that doesn't solve his current issue... but i have a feeling that a few driver versions later the problems he's having will go away.

well I now have not one but two shiny new Atheros cards dying to link to my DIR-855 for full bang speed. Guess I will have to keep on trying. Fortunately I took my 3945 ABG from my Acer and took out my wifes 4965 (she wont notice the speed difference :)

Keep those ideas coming!!! I am hard pressed to believe this sucker wont work under Vista 64 since they have the drivers out?????

well I tore down the laptop about half way and ran a third wire. Got it all back together (no screws unaccounted for YEAH) Installed 4965AGN and it runs a heck of a lot faster. I finally figured out there is an on/off switch on the right side of the keyboard. Going to install the Atheros one more time just to see if I can get it to go. will post back results

well its official, Atheros cards and the 8920 dont play nice together. Any intel card I put in works fine and the on/off button for wireless functions as it should. Put the Atheros in and even though its detected the radio cannot be turned on. Not sure if its a driver issue or that Acer locked the bios to anything other than Intel cards.

Anyone want to buy some slightly used wifi cards :)

yeah I think that's the reality of it. I am hoping a future driver release might solve it though.

i doubt his BIOS is locked to intel cards since he said they show up in the device manager as WORKING... but will not connect to his network,,,

it's a driver issue between ATHEROS drivers and VISTA64.

i bet if he setup a dual boot XP setup, the cards would work fine in XP, i'm currently communicating with a ATHEROS 5008 using XP, but the WIFI button doesn't control the card... (i'm guessing that's due to the firmware in the card.)
