I have a 7720G (Santa Rosa based) that has 4GB in it.

Has anyone tried using the new 4GB SODIMMS to upgrade your acer to 8GB?

Well looking around yesterday I saw that on the Sager site that you could get up to 8 gig with the NP9820. But next to it there was a message that only 6.8 would be readable even with a 64 bit OS. Also i looked at the price of 4 gig laptop memory and I found some for 399.99.

I believe that is due to the chipset not supporting 8Gigs yet.

I do not think anyone has tried 8Gigs yet in the 7720. Firstly they are way too expensive at the moment and there is no real need for it as most people don't even use 100% of 2Gigs of RAM. I currently have 2Gigs and under normal usage I use around 30% and during gaming I push 90%.

I guess the Chipset do support 8GBs. However, you would need to flash the BIOS because Acer had flashed the BIOS to support only 4Gbs.
You can check it using your Acer eSettings Management.(select memory tab)
I think you would see maximum memory support 4Gbs.

I am using AS 6920G and the Acer eSettings Management stated it support up to 4GBs only. But, when I use CPU-Z to check my mainboard, I found that it is using Intel GM965 chipset that support up to 8GBs(checked in intel website).

So, you can try CPU-Z and check your mainboard model and chipset.
Google it or go to Intel website to have a look.
