Well, you know it has a bigger MXM slot, right? You could put something like a gtx 280m in there with .netrollers modded BIOS.

AFAIK the 9920G still has the normal (4-amp) MXM connector, not the 16-amp HE version, so a 280M will probably throttle severely. (For safekeeping, I set the power limits in the MXM structure as 30W on battery and 50W on AC, with 40W max dissipation. I have no schematic, so I can't find out the exact HW limits.)

    Hey Netroller..

I may well give this new bios a go this week since my machine has been gathering dust for a few months and only just got hold of thermal paste to redo my cpu...

Do you have any quick links to the rescue disk you speak of, I can't even remember the bios type off the top of my head at the moment so will need to do some work before having a crack at it... :)

Edit: just found the other thread all about poss fix so will go give that a read first :)

    It's happened again!

My SSD drive has died, can't see it in BIOS at all.

More data lost, wish I'd never bought one now, they seem very unreliable.

Will try for a Warranty replacement but I'll never be able to trust it after this.

    Nope a Vertex 2.

Rang them today they'll send me another, apparently there is a more up to date firmware, I hope that fixes this very annoying problem.

I bought my son the same SSD at Christmas and he's had no problems. Let's hope its third time lucky. :)

Got my third Vertex 2 SSD drive today, it has an updated firmware which will hopefully make it more stable.

It's certainly nice to bootup in 30 seconds instead of 3 1/2 mins, which my old 5200 harddrive took. :)

I've now got my fingers crossed for some long term stability.

    @ azmoo,

You're in luck for the Penryn CPU compatibilty with the 9920; it's reported working. Just today blackened87 posted the very information here. http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...-acer-x920g-vs-geforce-9600m-gt-issue-34.html

You will most likely find lots of interest in the last few pages on this other thread (as of today). NetRolller 3D is trying to find a system BIOS fix to make other cards work in the 9920. However though, blackened87's post, 07:53pm 17th Oct 2011, opens up options for getting any Acer compatible 8600M GT or 9500M GS flashed to the 9920 8600M GT video BIOS. That will make for easier shopping. Good luck.

I am wary of the link you added for the 8600M GT you are looking to buy. The details lower in the page claim it is compatible with 5920 and 9920 laptops. As we know this isn't possible (without modification of the video card BIOS), my guess it's more likey for 5920. (Unless they have both versions of course.) Most likely you buy it and flash it yourself to work in the 9920, but the are ready made ones on eBay. Like we said before the 9920 8600M GT has a specific vBIOS (video BIOS).

EDIT [RE CPU: More here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/381963-souping-up-9920g.html]]
2nd Edit: You could allways try oven baking your failed 8600M GT to fix it, before spending any money. Take a look on youtube, for method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDXGouSv_X8&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL78954C5CFF33BD2A
Theres's even an option to do it with a hairdryer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g-xt0CI

The current system BIOS in the x920G thread definitely fixes compatibility with any Acer-VBIOSed 8600M GT, as well as HP's 9300M GS. Still working on the 9600M GT.

The Asus GT 240M will not be supported, unless someone sends me a VBIOS from an MXM3.0 GT 240M. (MXM3.0 VBIOSes are relatively easy to mod into MXM2.1.)

And for those hoping for an ATI/AMD upgrade: Most probably a no-go. I've yet to see any ATI/AMD VBIOS that calls the MXM interrupt in any way.

Yes i use the 9920g regularly and is still going strong 18 months after the repair, i have a pretty good desktop which is my main machine and although i'm not a gamer the 9920 gets used a fair bit when on the road.

apologies for the long wait for a reply

I have just done exactly this. I have a 9920. I have installed a 8600MGT from a 5920. I have flashed the vBIOS to 60.84.62.00.39 but i can still only get a display on an external monitor. I have also flashed the sBIOS to CV120_MXM_V2.

I can actually see the screen displaying a very dark grey "light" when using vBIOS 60.84.62.00.39. Ive tried other 8600MGT vBIOS's and the screen stays dead black. I always get an external monitor displaying perfectly.

Has anyone got any ideas

Wow this thread is still running two years after I started it!

I've just resurrected my 9920G to use to read the online Newspapers after cancelling my real paper which had gone up to £27.40 a month. :(

I'm still having to use an external monitor, as far as I can make out there's still no solution for using the on board screen with the ATI 3650.

    Have I missed something?

New inverter gives same results. Grey screen that i can make black by pressing funtion/F6. Always displays on an external monitor no problem. I can see the backlight working if i look behind the panel.

    Im at a loss!

@Puddleduck: There is no solution for the HD3650, or any other ATI card for that matter, and probably there newer will be one. The problem is that (true at least for all ATI cards I've seen so far) ATI's cards are not MXM, they merely soldered a motherboard GPU and associated VBIOS on an MXM PCB. The 3650 never reads the MXM structure, and instead always assumes that a 6-bit dual-link LVDS display is connected, with EDID data available over the card's I2C link - this is not true for the 9920G.
(The same is true for Nvidia's GT216-series cards, though unlike ATI, these ones do show some hope because MXM3.0 GT216s are true MXM, and an MXM3.0 VBIOS can be converted to MXM2.1.)

Your best bet is getting a 9600M GT or an FX 770M.

@helpmedisappear: What happens if you boot with only the internal display connected?

Hi PuddleD, as far as I can tell , no support for ATI cards since, to quote Netroller "And for those hoping for an ATI/AMD upgrade: Most probably a no-go. I've yet to see any ATI/AMD VBIOS that calls the MXM interrupt in any way." EDIT, somehow missed the other replies before typing this! ;)

My 9920G is totally dead now, whether power supply or laptop issue, light on power pack just fades when plugged in to laptop..... so given up on it and just used some of the parts from it. Real shame but spending any more money on it just for the hell of it without knowing if it will work again doesn't seem worth it.

    Hi all,

Just a quick one to say i've outfitted my 9920g with the t7800 cpu (2.6 ghz) today and all is well. It seems to handle alot more alot quicker although the windows experience score is still curiously low due to the graphics card apparently......

I happened to have the 9600M GT vbios modded for 9920g :
    9600mgt-ddr3-9920g.rom
but lacking the Fx770M one - if someone have this one confirmed working - please post here.
BTW I saw .NetRolller post somewhere saying about Fx770M - 9920g mod: EDIT: Does not work; it seems that this VBIOS doesn't support EDID-less displays at all.

Anyone had tested fx770m or fx750m on 9920g?

    if flash a fx770m @ 9600gt (ddr3 512mb) will resolve the EDID problem?

1 i will simple edit fx770m as 9600gt acer with nibitor

    or

    2 i had a 9600gt bios,i'll backup it and after flash on the fx770m

i see a 9300gs Vbios mod for 9920g...is the fx370m the 9300gs alter ego card?

    thanks a lot

    @netroller3d : u italian...me too...can i contact to u directly?

I'm not really Italian, but right now I'm living in Italy.

You don't need to do anything with nibitor, just flash the 9600M GT ROM with "-4 -5 -6".

Both of these are pretty old, although hdx18 might have a configuration with better videocard (8800M GTS)
Not saying that 8600M GT is a very unreliable card, that tends ro fail too often.
Anyway, I would recommend looking at newer Sager \ Clevo laptops with 18.4 screens (like x8100), or Alienware M18x - they are indeed more expensive, but you may actually find a good deal on the secondary market.

I sent out a private message today (shown below). I thought I'd tag it to the end of the thread so people know how it finished up for me. Best of luck to anybody with this problem.

I did get it working in a limited fashion (no acceleration) by baking the GPU in the oven. There are many descriptions of how to do this on the net. Do it only as a last resort. The problem was caused by bad soldering. Heating can make it better. There is no flash option for the HD 3650 apparently according to the forum it's missing a required chip. So I have a laptop for net browsing OR with the HD3650 installed I can play games but need an external monitor. Best of luck. Barry.

About which bioses you are talking about? If you want to make an archive of modded BIOSes, you should find and download modified BIOSes by yourself.
Это ты интересно загнул. Если ты действительно хочешь сделать что-то типа архива с БИОСами, тебе самому надо искать и качать их. Никто специально для тебя их закидывать не будет.
