i've been looking around the site for recommended upgrades for my acer laptop. Right now, the computer's just as it came, except i upgraded to vista ultimate(32 bit). It's an aspire 5315-2122, intel celeron processor, 1GB ram, 80GB hdd. From what i've read, the intel core2duo t5450 seems to be a popular choice. But is the performance gain really worth the $60-$70 they're being sold on ebay for? Also, if i upgrade, will i also be able to max out my ram at 4GB instead of just 2GB? Are there any other upgrades or software that i'd need to buy if i upgraded to this processor?... lastly, i've read on here that i can't upgrade my video card, so is there any other way to improve graphics?(dvd's look terrible on my laptop for some reason).

PCwizard2008 says my 5315 supports 4 gig ram,, but i've seen other ACER users report thier pcs not booting with 2x 2gig sticks installed... so i'm unsure about what to tell you at this point....but until you step up to a 64 bit OS your PC cannot use 4GB of ram,,, it MIGHT be OK to put 4GB in the machine,, but it will only recognize about 3GB of the 4GB.... so you can buy 4 gig but you may not actually get to use both sticks..

yes the T5450 is worth the $60... you can also go up to the T7500 if you wanna spend the cash.... but for us cheapskates the T5450 seems to be the best deal for the cash.... T7100 and T7250 might also be looked at,,,

lastly i've yet to put a video DVD in my laptop,,, but i know the DIVX videos of popular TV shows seem so much more crisp than on my std.-def TV....
that problem might be in the CODEC used by ACER/VISTA.. not sure.... i use the klite codec pack...easily found thru google... but i'm not sure if it will UPGRADE the DVD decoder???

if anyone ever figures a cost-effective way of upgrading intergrated video they will end up rich rich rich....

no problem, mooler... just glad to help

and glad to hear you had the pink socket,,,
you should have seen me modding my grey socket
using a lighter to heat a thumb tack,, then poking a hole where i needed one in the socket.... d@mn celeron only sockets... but it works :)

be sure to post results in Hoggies CPU UPGRADE thread.... he's making a database of what works and what doesn't...

i'm currently shopping for a T7300 or higher if i can find a good price... speed and performance is addicting.... better than drugs... all i have to do is boot to get a boost ;)

    later,
    bigO
